Love is not linear. It’s complicated, and never so much as in a world as the one that exists in The Handmaid’s Tale. Returning after an almost three-year hiatus, the dystopian drama is set to conclude its story after the sixth and final season.

The journey was initially centered around June’s (Elisabeth Moss) desperation to be set free from being a handmaid — a child-bearing prisoner — in Gilead. Once she got out, the shift focused on reuniting with her family, including her husband Luke (O-T Fagbenle) and daughter Hannah (Jordana Blake). But there are complications. She has a baby in tow, and Nichole wasn’t fathered by her Commander. She’s a different person, and the traditional happy ending might not be right for her.

June’s Unintended Love Triangle in ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’

June’s situation is more complicated than birthing a baby from another man while believing she would never see her husband again. She was tasked with having relations with Commander Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) to bear him and Serena (Yvonne Strahovski) a baby. Despite being part of The Ceremony every month during ovulation, however, it never bore fruit.

Serena, being the intelligent woman she is, recognizes that Fred might actually be the problem and not her. Seeing that June had developed a closeness with Fred’s driver, Nick (Max Minghella), she made a suggestion that was more of an order. She needed June to sleep with Nick, hoping he could impregnate her. She could then pass the baby off as Fred’s, and no one but them would be any the wiser, or perhaps he’d know but would pretend he didn’t to keep up the ruse.

June and Nick comply, not having a choice otherwise. But it’s clear there’s a magnetic attraction between them anyway. Once June gets pregnant, she and Nick grow even closer. Even if the Waterfords plan to raise Nichole, this is their baby. And she was born out of what might be budding love.

As June progresses through her plan to escape, Nick goes out of his way to risk his life and position in Gilead to help her. They sleep together on other occasions, though June feels guilty knowing that Luke is still out there waiting for her. What will happen once she returns home to him if she’s successful in doing so?

She is, and it’s indeed complicated. While Luke understands, in a way, recognizing that June was put through serious trauma and accepting that she would start to have feelings for someone, it’s awkward. But she loves her husband. She thought she would never see him again. Now that they have been reunited, those feelings come flooding back. Or do they? One thing is for certain: her feelings for Nick haven’t entirely gone away.

Why June Should Be With Nick in ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’

Based on the first three episodes of Season 6, everything will come to a head in every way by the end. The question is: how will the story end for June? The fairy tale ending would see her and Luke successfully rescue Hannah, head back to Alaska, and restart a life there with their family, including Nichole.

But June and Luke have become very different people. Even though it’s clear there’s still deep love between them, so much time has passed, and so much has happened that the family they had can never be the family they have today. If Hannah is rescued, the best thing for her is to get both her parents back. But it’s entirely possible that the show could end without Hannah reuniting with them at all.

If this is the case, June might be better off following her heart and being with Nick. While he’s married with a baby on the way, the pair are like forbidden lovers who both want to be with one another but can’t for different reasons. Even Nick’s wife can see that and becomes angry with him because of his inability to let June go.

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’s sixth season premieres this month after an almost three-year wait. Here’s a refresher.

Everyone can see that Nick is not just infatuated with June but deeply devoted to her. When Mark Tuello (Sam Jaeger) needs to get in touch with him, he uses June as bait. He knows that Nick will come running at the mere mention of her name. He even reveals to June that he visited her in the hospital after he heard of the accident. He also punched Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford), believing he was responsible, and got himself temporarily imprisoned to defend her honor.

This is made more apparent in Episode 3 when he shows up to meet her despite earlier tossing the SIM card from the burner phone Tuello gave him into the fire. He declares his love to her as he takes her to where Luke and Moira are hiding. When they are caught by two guards, Nick makes the rash decision to shoot and kill them so they can escape. He will literally do anything for June.

At the same time, Luke is starting to look more unhinged. While his anger is entirely justifiable, it’s tough to imagine him being able to go back to the man June fell in love with. Sure, he went out of his way to save her and defended her honor by literally killing the man who intentionally hit her with his truck. But also, she will never be able to go back to the woman he fell in love with. Nick understands June in a way Luke never will for no other reason than circumstance.

Nick Loves June Enough To Let Her Go

In the tearful end scene of Season 3, Nick manages to get June, Luke, and Moira to safety with Tuello. Luke gives Nick an awkward “buddy bump” as he and Moira walk to the car. June sticks around a bit longer and the pair share a longing goodbye. But June tells Nick they have done this dance before, and they shouldn’t bother saying goodbye. It’s rather “see you later.”

The most telling scene is when June, walking away to the car, slowly turns to catch another glimpse of Nick. She’s still in love with him, too. But it’s complicated. She also loves her husband. That’s her family. But she’ll forever be linked to Nick. Nichole, who June now calls Holly, is his daughter, too. He will have to see her. Even if they live separate lives with separate families, there’s a bond between them beyond the child that can never be broken.

The stars of the upcoming conclusion to ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ have spoken about the final season and expect people to come out “hopeful.”

Maybe June doesn’t need to end up with Nick. Perhaps what she needs is to get some semblance of her previous life back. And that’s with Luke and Hannah. But is that what her heart truly wants? It’s what she wanted the entire time. It’s what Nick stuck his neck out to help her get despite his feelings for her. But when she met Nick, she fell for him and saw what this man would do for her at the expense of his own freedom and safety. She felt something that she had never felt before.

The whole star-crossed lovers storyline makes sense for them. Maybe they will remain with their respective families, only ever sharing passing glances and heartbreaking meetings so Nick can see his daughter.
