Spanish club Valencia serves a lawsuit against Netflix over Vinícius Júnior Documentary
Madrid (AP) – Spanish club Valencia said on Monday that he had filed a lawsuit against Netflix claiming falsehoods in a documentary about Brazil Player Vinícius Júnior. Valencia said the documentary mistakenly accused a large group of Valencia fans of making racist singing against the Real Madrid forward in a La Liga match in 2023. The club filed the lawsuit after its public claims for corrections were not fulfilled by the documentary’s production company. The lawsuit is against Netflix and the production company for the damage to “Valencia’s honor.” It seeks financial compensation, corrections of the captions in the documentary and the publication of the sentencing, the club said. Valencia first threatened the lawsuit. Vinícius representatives at the time said the player would not get involved because the question was against Netflix and the producers of the documentary. A request for comment sent to Netflix was not answered immediately. The documentary contains a video on social media showing what a great multitude was at Mestalla Stadium who sang at Vinícius. The video has the word ‘mono’, Spanish for monkey, in the captions. But Valencia claims that the fans actually sang ‘tonto’, which is Spanish for stupid. The then Madrid coach, Carlo Ancelotti, was quickly accusing Valencia fans of racist offending Vinícius, but later apologized after he said he was realized that it was not the whole stadium singing the word monkey. There were fans who did racial abuse during that match. Three of them became the first fans convicted in racism-related matters in professional football in Spain. They sentenced the eighth month imprisonment. During their trial, experts showed that the video was edited with the captions “monkey” and, according to Spanish media, does not match reality. Vinícius, who was repeatedly subjected to racist insults in Spain, was in tears during that 2023 match against Valencia. He confronted a Valencia fan who called him a monkey and made monkey gestures of the plots behind one of the goals. ___
