Records abundantly at Lords to South Africa Hys Maiden ICC title | Mint
London [UK]June 15 (Ani): South Africa’s first ICC title since 1998, which broke 28-year-old Jinx, a 5-wicket triumph in the World Test Championships against Australia, has caused several records to overthrow in the ‘Home of Cricket’, Lord’s. It was a year to break jinxes across different sports. Bologna lifted the title for the first time in 51 years, while Newcastle United ended the drought after 56 years. Tottenham Hotspur lifted the Europa League for the first time in decades, and Paris Saint-Germain got their hands on the UEFA Champions League for the first time in their history. In cricket, royal challengers ended Bengaluru’s 18-year-old guard after beating Punjab Kings to lift their first IPL trophy. Now South Africa has lodged its name in history after ending the ICC trophy drought, which lasted 9,722 days. A target of 282 runs was the question of the Proteas to chase and end their decades -long title hunting. Aiden Markram did not put a foot wrong and cleared South Africa’s route which led to the WTC Mace with a swing goat 136 (207). The Temba Bavuma-led troops knocked down the 282 run from the pocket green and pulled off their fifth highest chase in Test cricket, with four of the five wins against Australia. This is especially the second highest chase at Lord’s. South Africa has expanded its finish line to eight with another success story that started in West Indies in August. It is the second highest finish line for the Proteas in the format, behind nine consecutive wins, which they achieved in 2002-03. The eight-games finishes are the highest in the history of the World Test Championships, which improved India and New Zealand, each winning seven consecutive matches during the first cycle. Bavuma continued to drop his flawless record as South Africa’s test captain, win nine and secure one draw. Only England’s Percy Chapman (9) achieved as many victories as Bavuma as Test captain in the first ten games. Markram’s 136 was his third ton in the fourth inning, and only former captain Graeme Smith, 4, had more for the Proteas in the fourth inning. (Ani)
