Wow, what a terrific series finals to LuthenThe Acclaimed Disney+ Show About the rebellious who challenged an empire, and also all of the other rebelli, Mostly by lecturing say incessantly.
Kidding, of Course, Except for the “Terrific” part. In the Home Stretch, as Elder ENTERS BBY 1 AND MOVES EVER CLOSER to the terminating point of Rogue oneThe Show Drops Its Closest Study Yet, and it is not a Cassian Andor Himself, who does not appears in this installment. Luthen Rael, Played with Authority and Conviction by Stellan Skarsgård, Has HIS FINAL STAND, TYPICALLY UNFLAPPABLE AS he learns from his his about-be-final Meeting with Lonni Jung of the Empire’s Secret Deat Star Plans, Uncovered Straight Fomes. DOES LONNI SIGT HIS ONDE DEATH WARANT BY IMPLORING LUTTEN TO TAKE NOTICE OF THIS INTEL UTRESTANCE? “I washn’t followed. Because if they know what i found, they would have let me out of the Building, ‘Heys, and in retrospect just a few minutes late, he does seem acidentally implant Luthen to kill and leave no loose.
Still, IT’S a Chilly Bit of Business, This Off-SCREEN OFFING OF JUNG, HIS PANIC IN THE FACE OF A COLET-Headed, Harder-Hearted Spy Parallying a Similar Skene at the Beginning Rogue one. (Only Rogue one did actually show cass doing the job.) The Elder-era Desollation of Once-Bustling Coruscant Has Rarely Loked SO Evocative As in the Shallow-Focus Conversation BetWeen Lonni and Luthen, or the slumped-over aftermath as lonni’s body alone on a bench by an antiseptic-looking fountain.
I’ve always felt a Little Cruelty Behind Luthen’s Pragmatism-he obviously is relashing the decisions he has to make, but there’s a glimmer of self-satistion in his lack of Maching. Its hard to say if it is there intent intentionally; IT SEEMS MORE LIKELY ITS SPANS TO SCAN AS FIERCE DEDICATION TO A LIFE THAT I KNOWS WILL LIKELY NOT REWARD HIM, WILL PROBABLY ENDATATELY AND/OR VIOLENTLY, But May Improve Conditions for Future Generations. Still: there’s something a little nasty about using a man’s long-ago Loyalty oath as an Excuse to Simply Kill Him for Safety, especilly when the operation is burned anyway, yes? Am i being thick in wondering why the poor guy can’t actually abscond for yavin as luthen suggests?
At Least Luthen Can’t Be Accused of Not Practicing What He Preaches. Or Rather, he Can, but Mostly by the Likes of Dedra Meeri. AFTER MEETING WITH HIS LONGTIME Second-in-command kleya, Luthen Insists that he’ll handle “the burn” of his antiquities Shop, which entails cool-looking metal over their destroy the evidence. A Lucky Thing for Kleya, Too, Becauses That Precisely Wen Dedra Shows Up at the Shop, Maintaining a Facade for A Few Short Minutes before gleefulling Hersself to Lutt and Finally Spitting Out what she’s ben apparently dying to her births, “Axis.” Besides Knocking His “Ridiculous Wig” (Girl!), She apparently taxes issue with what she was describes as “hiding in the shelter of Imperial Peace and Quiet. It ‘s canny observation from the writers: like a lot of fascists and fascist collaborators, she took disagreement with the ruling class as an affront. Dedra doesn’t really spout a lot of empire ideals, which is bot Convenient (The Show Can Leave as vague as they are offen been throughout Star Wars history) and telling: She resents the idea that she’s being vilified by revolutionaries for obeying the rules. There’s Also More than a Hint of Class Resentment, Howver Misguided; She sees someone likes Luthen as benefiting from her hard work to maintain an elite perch while nudging everyone else into chaos.
It ‘another Interesting Look Into Dedra’s Psychology, Which Luthen Promotly Interrupts by Cutting Himself with a Possibly Centuries-Old Knife. Ever the pragmatist, he has plenty of reasons to this, and that it functions as an instant rebuke to dedra’s ambitions probably doesn’t clear the top five. But it does that indeed; Her operation is subsequently described as premature, reckless, and a failure, and the last time we see in this episode, sheeing arrests and led away, puffing up with fakeness that she’ll be vindicated.
Luthen, Meanwhile, indirectly hands the episode Over to Kleya. While he and lies unconiscious in a hospital, imperials Ordering that he kept alive so he can be tortured and quesioned, kleya Springs ino action; The Remainder of the Episode Toggles Back and Fortth BetWeen Her Flashbacks to the Early Days of Her Relationship with Luthen, and Her Current Mission to Clear the Safe House and Infiltrate the Hospital. Another Show Might More Strongly Imply that kleya is disguising herself as a nurse in order to rescue luthen, and some viewers May Well Get that impression, but Her ultimate isn’t played as a shocker of a twist. AFTER ALL, IF The Empire Wants Luthen Alive and Imprisoned (at Least for Now), she will naturally see it it is time to set to the free ANOTHER WAY.
As the show locks into kleya’s story, Her flashbacks show like she met she was a child of war and he was a relicant Military man, sneake off from a conflict in despondency and call out it stop! ” Over the Din of Battle. (I’m Not Entirely Clear on What Military Operation This Wauld Be, or Why Someone Luthen’s Age Would Be in Particular Role. But Based on Kleya’s Age, It Wauld Have Happened After of the Republic in Bby 19) Obscured pov shot, befitting the episode’s particularly Tight Focus.
IT’s a Little Surpring that Elder Zooms in so Closely on kleya this late in the game, but not unwelcome. Her dialogue-light hospital mission is a marvel of suspens generated through point of view; Walking Down Hospital Corridides dressed as a nurs is inherently excitation. But augmented by a few more flashbacks where kleya estabishes herself as luthen’s Sometime Daughter, Illustrating Their Closenes but Also the Ruthlessness they ‘strength to live by, this one-woman has such precision and economy that it is full a’re geta Biography in the Space of About 15 minutes, Complete with intuitive links Between past (Luthen and Young Kleya Setting off a bomb on a Peaceful-looking plans) and present (kleya setting off a bomb to distracts Hospital SECIURY SO CAN REACH LUTHEN). Elder Gets a lot of Praise for Its Rigorousness and Seriousness; Something that maybe mentioned mes often than it is should be is how well it is made of the scope of Star Wars Work in a television-freely format. This episode is obviously just one slice of a Large narrative, YET KLEYA FINALLY REACHES LUTTEN, UNPLUGS HIM FROM LIFE SUPPORT, AND QUIETY SHEDS A TEAR, FOLLOWED BY AN APPROPRIATEly SLOW TO HIS NOW-LIFES BODY, IT FESLUSE FEELS However Temporarylly. For just a moment before the action resumes, the show ahead a breath.
• i undersand that Elder Is Serious, Grown-Up, Sophisticticated Stuff. I WOUT ALSO LIKE TO REQUEST One (1) Action Figure Made from the Elderly Looking Alien Creature Kleya Pushes Around in Her Nurse Guise. (I do’t think i’m unfairly aging her; Star Wars Hospitals Become The New Star Wars cantinas.
• The planet where Luthen and a Young kleya have a nice lunch while setting off a bomb… is that naboo? Architecturally and Schenically, IT Sort of Looks Like it, Although You Can Always Count on Star Wars to bring up a new planet that loooks a lot like a family planet but isn’t for some reason.
