Why is the festival of Baisakhi celebrated?
Baisakhi is the time of ripening of rabi crop. When the wheat crop starts to go golden in the fields, then the farmers are very happy to see the fruits of their hard work. To celebrate this happiness, they celebrate the festival of Baisakhi. On this day, people wear colorful clothes, perform traditional dances and swing to the tune of drums and drums. At the same time, people of Sikh community make New Year on this day. This is also very important in Sikhism because in 1699, the tenth Guru of Sikhs, Guru Govind Singh ji, established the Khalsa Panth on this day. He convened a large meeting in Anandpur Sahib, in which he had chosen five people who sacrificed to protect religion and humanity. These are called ‘Panj Pyare’. These five people became the first Khalsa of Sikhism and they are considered to be the beginning of the Khalsa Panth.
Guru Govind Singh ji gave a message to end the discrimination of high and low in the society and taught everyone to consider it equal. He ordered all Sikh men to apply ‘Singh’ and women nicknamed ‘Kaur’, so that all would be a sense of equality. He also gave Khalsa five special marks or identity, called Panj Kakar. He asked Khalsa to wear a hairstyle, comb, kachhra, hard and saber.
Traditions of Baisakhi Day
Gurudwaras are very decorated on the occasion of Baisakhi. The gurdwaras with flowers and lights are worth watching. On this day, Kirtan, Gurbani and Langar are organized on this day. In the evening, people burn wood outside their homes and bang Bhangra and Gidda. Dishes are made in homes and people congratulate each other on Baisakhi.
