Yusuf Pathan, cricketer-driven politician, faced the wrath of Netizen about a social media post in which he could enjoy that he enjoyed “Chai Ki Chuski”, even if the situation remained tense in different parts of West Bengal. Pathan, an MP of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of the West Bahengale Baharampur, posted his photos on Instagram with the heading: “Easy afternoons, good chai and a quiet environment. Just in the moment.” His post came a day after violence broke out in some districts of West Bengale during protests against the WAQF Amendment Act. Murshidabad, which includes Pathan’s constituency Baharampur, was one of the worst affected districts. Three people allegedly died in the violence and about 150 people have been arrested so far. Why is Yusuf Pathan stepped? Many on social media condemned Yusuf Pathan for posting on Instagram, while his constituency “burned” in the midst of violence. “Shame on you,” a comment on his message says. “Your constituency is burning and your farm here on Instagram. Are you even human,” said a user. Another said, ‘Waha Murshidabad Jal Raha Hai Aur AAP Ghum Rahe Ho? [Murshidabad is burning and you are roaming around]” Murshidabad brand sir, please do something. You are the elected MP!, “Said another person while beating Yusuf Pathan. BJP spokesman Shehzad Poonawalla responded to Pathan’s post on social media. He said:” Mamata Bannerjee named Yusuf Pathan chose him and gave him a ticket. “Today, as Bengal fire, Hindus is selectively killed, Yusuf Pathan enjoys drinking tea … It is the priority of TMC that Pathan Sahab will drink and enjoy tea, while Bengal Brand and the Das family are killed,” Poonawalla said. Meanwhile, a user said on social media: “I don’t blame Yusuf Pathan because he does his Deene Kaam- the blame on Mamata Banerjee who brought him and Hindus who voted him. This is the only problem. ‘ Violence in West Bengal died three people on Friday night in the Muslim majority district of Murshidabad in the wake of the violence in the district, West Bengal police said. At least 18 policemen were injured in the violence on Friday. Several vehicles, including police wagons, were set on fire, stones were thrown at security forces, and roads were blocked when violence on Friday made different parts of the state, especially Murshidabad, disappear during protests on the WAQF (Amendment Act) on Friday. Some flames were also reported on Saturday. The WAQF (amendment) bill was submitted to the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on April 2 and 3 respectively. It was approved in both houses and later received the president’s consent, after which it became a law. On April 5, President Droupadi Murmu gave her permission to the WAQF (amendment) Bill, 2025. While the opposition protested against the WAQF Act, the BJP launched a ‘WAQF Reforms Awareness Campaign’, which will last from April 20 to May 5. First Published: 13 Apr 2025, 01:17 IST
