Increase in cholera cases in Sudan, 2.729 new infections in a week
Khartum, May 31 (IANS). In Sudan, especially in the capital Khartum, there is an increase in the cases of cholera. Meanwhile, Sudani Health Ministry has announced that it has received more than 29 lakh doses of cholera vaccine. Cholera is a serious disease that spreads through dirty water or outdated foods. This can lead to a lack of diarrhea and water. It can also be fatal if there is no treatment. In a statement on Friday, the Sudan Ministry of Health said: “A total of 29,05,400 vaccines were obtained to handle the cholera epidemic. The vaccine was brought to prevent the infection especially in khartum.” The government said this vaccine was donated by an organization called International Coordination Group (ICG). The World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have also helped with this work. The statement said that these vaccines will be sent to the Khartum state, where a major vaccination campaign will soon begin. All people of the age of one year or older will be vaccinated. According to the ministry, Sudan has received more than 1.69 doses for crore vaccine since October 2023 by the Partnership of Health Agencies and ICG. Earlier this week, Sudan Minister of Health Hatham Mohammad Ibrahim said the number of patients infected with cholera in Khartum has increased. In May itself, at least 2500 people in Khartum suffered from Cholera. The ministry said on Tuesday that there were cases of 2,729 new infections in a week and that 172 people lost their lives due to the disease. According to the Doctors Without Borders Without Government Group Without Borders, electricity and water services are repeatedly closed in the Khartum state. If electricity and clean water are not available, people are forced to use dirty water, spreading an epidemic like cholera. -Ians pk/abm shares this story tags
