Australian cricket -big player Ricky Ponting believes that Shubman Gill should work on his innings and that he should bat at number four amid extra responsibility of Captaincy on the English tour. Since the retirement of Virat Kohli, there has been speculation about pitch on number four for India. Ponting said Gill could bat at this place in the early stage of captaincy. Ponting told PTI during the IPL: “Gill’s shape in white ball format is fantastic. He will have to work on his test batting. It’s not easy if you are a new captain. It’s not easy for the new captain to think about his batting.” He said that India made the right decision by making Gill captain. Two -times -World Championships captain Ponting said Gill will remain captain for a long time. He said: “This past season, when Rohit decided not to play a test in Sydney, Gill could become captain. Bumrah had doubts about fitness and he was injured during the match.” Ponting also said that Gill would have to work on the spiritual aspect of the batting. He said: “There were a big batsmen of the test whose defense technology was not so good. Forder Sehwag is a good example of this. But if you have control over your stroke, you don’t have to think too much about defensive techniques. You need to work on the spiritual aspect of the game.” At the age of just 25, Gill is one of the youngest players who have been appointed as Test captain of India lately.
