Family decisions gave new life
Dr. Rakesh Dua, head of the Neurosurgery Department of Shalimar Bagh Fortis Hospital, said that after the woman was declared brain dead, the family was informed about the organ donation. The family agreed to this great work and the woman’s organs were donated to the needy patients.
According to the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO), when a patient is declared a brain dead, the hospital can give counseling to his family to donate organ. One kidney and lungs of the woman were transplanted into two patients at Fortis Hospital in Shalimar Bagh, while the other kidney was sent to Fortis Memorial Research Institute in Gurugram.
Need for increasing organ donation in India
The rate of organ donation in India is still very low. Experts believe that every year thousands of patients need organ transplant, but due to lack of donors, many patients die. Doctors and health organizations believe that if awareness is spread, then the number of organ donation can increase.
