According to a report from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FO), the situation of food insecurity and malnutrition in 2024 worsened, causing 29.5 million people to be hungry in 53 countries. Compared to the year 2023, the number of people hungry increased by 1.37 crores. This figure reflects the sixth annual growth in acute food insecurity in the worst areas in the world. The report was published in the Global Network on food crises in the year 2025. It is an international alliance consisting of food and agricultural institutions, the United Nations World Food Program and various government and non-governmental organizations. The United Nations Secretary -General Antonio Guterres has described these figures as extremely dangerous to the world. He said that the distribution rate of appetite and malnutrition in the world is much higher than our control ability. However, a third of the grain produced worldwide is wasted. Antonio Guterres said that the lack of funds to meet human needs are constantly complicating the world problem as hunger. Acute food insecurity usually stems from a combination of different factors. Poverty, economic shocks and imbalances in the weather are important in this. Some parts of the population have experienced other problems than hungry. In 2024, famine was confirmed in some parts of Sudan. Food insecurity in Gaza Strip, South Sudan, Haiti and Mali were recorded on a terrible level. In the Gaza Strip there was no famine situation due to an increase in humanitarian aid. The report states that if a large scale continues military operations and blockade, the risk could increase in May and September 2025. According to the report by the Xinhua news agency, approximately 9.5 crores from 12.8 crore people relocated in 2024 – in the countries that exist with a food crisis, are already living in countries. In addition, economic tremor led to food insecurity in 15 countries, which influenced 5.94 crore people. Weather changes have also placed 18 countries in crisis, affecting more than 9.6 Crore people, especially in South Asia, southern parts of Africa and Horn of Africa.
