Break: Lagos government does not invite whistleblower over the scandal for sex-for-marks in public high school
The scandal has allegations of sexual abuse of at least 11 female students by a further math teacher, Mr. Egberongbe adegbenga toheeb involves. The Lagos State Ministry of Education has uncovered Clement James, the whistleblower who uncovered the sex-for-mark scandal at Babs Fafunwa Millennium Senior Secondary School in Ojodu-Berger. The scandal has allegations of sexual abuse of at least 11 female students by a further math teacher, Mr. Egberongbe adegbenga toheeb involves. A message sent to James on Friday, obtained by Saharan Porters, reads: “Please, I have the command to invite you to the office on Monday 7 April 2025. Time: 10:00. Location: Office of Education Quality Assurance (Room 217).” The invitation comes amid allegations that the school management has tried to cover the scandal and intimidate James for the exposure of the abuse. The sex-for-mark scheme came to light after students started talking about how Mr. Adegbenga allegedly attracted them under the pretense of academic help, but later forced them into sexual relationships. One of the victims told how the abuse began when she was in Senior Secondary 1 class. According to her, the teacher initially pretended to help her improve her math scores, but later put her under pressure to meet him in a hotel near Alagbon bus stop. Another student outlined how he left her in a classroom, removed his belt and tried to attack her before she managed to escape. Investigations by Saharan Porters revealed that Mr. Adegbenga was not an official government teacher, but was personally rented by the principal. According to sources, he allegedly abused students for years before the scandal broke. Instead of protecting the victims, the school administration allegedly turned against James, a member of the National Youth Service Corps (Nysc) and former school student, who played a key role in bringing the issue to light. On March 24, 2025, James was allegedly attracted to the school under false pretenses, only to be an ambush. Teachers allegedly seized his phone in an attempt to remove evidence. When he resisted, male teachers allegedly blocked the door while the vice principal recorded the incident. James also claimed to have been closed in a toilet in the head of the principal and could only escape when officials of the quality assurance for education for an unannounced visit arrived. Further reports indicated that some teachers were instructed to turn students against James, with one, Mrs. Dikko, and according to the students in SS1E, said to chase him away when they see him. After public outrage, the Lagos State Ministry of Education’s Monitoring and Investigation Department Mr. Adegbenga arrested and handed him to the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA). He was later arrested, postponed and granted bail in the amount of N300,000. His next court hearing is scheduled for April 22, 2025. Despite the legal action, the school authorities refused to recognize their role in protecting the accused. When Sahara Porters the principal, Mrs. Osunrinde, contacted, she rejected the call and blocked the number later. The Vice Principal, Mrs. Lungs, also refused to comment and say, “The case is in court, and I will not comment on it.” Lagos State Police Command spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin also refused to talk about the issue and declare that it would be “harmed” to discuss a continued case.
