False 'Cyclone Shakti' news sparks panic; With Expert explains cyclonic circulation vs Storm | Today news
In response to a wave of wrong information about ‘cyclone shakti’, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a strong explanation, which requests the public to remain calm and recognize the important distinction between a cyclonic circulation and a cyclonic storm. The explanation follows the distribution of unverified predictions and positions on social media that falsely claim to form a serious weather system. The IMD categorically denied and warned the existence of such a cyclone against the distribution of unverified information. Habibur Rahman Biswas, head of the forecast center in the Regional Meteorological Center in Kolkata, spoke to my Kolkata, explaining that the confusion is largely stemmed from a wrong interpretation of meteorological terminology. “Many people make a mistake with the mention of the word ‘cyclonic’ as a threatening threat of a cyclone, which is not the case,” Biswas said. He elaborates that cyclonic circulation refers to an air phenomenon, where winds turn in an anti -clockwise direction at heights ranging from 1.5 km to 7.6 km above the ground. “This is what we call cyclonic circulation. It affects weather patterns, but does not necessarily lead to a cyclone or has a serious impact on the ground,” he clarified. In contrast, a cyclonic storm is a well-defined, surface-level-pressure system, characterized by significantly lower central pressure with more than 10 millibars-which result in strong surface winds and potentially destructive weather. “A cyclonic circulation is the circulation of air at higher heights-over generally not harmful, while a cyclonic storm is a surface level, intense low-pressure system with high winds and potentially harmful consequences. The abuse or misunderstanding of these terms can cause unnecessary panic,” Biswas added. Biswas, which emphasizes its importance to rely on official sources, confirmed that “the IMD has not issued any cyclone warnings from now on”. He assured that any indications of cyclone development would be formally communicated by official bulletins. Earlier this week, the IMD issued a statement requesting it for media outlets and the public to refrain from spreading false or unverified weather information, warning that such actions only contribute to unnecessary fear and confusion.
