US is blocked to recall the visa status of foreign students
(Bloomberg) – A Federal Judge in California has issued a nationwide order that prevents the Trump administration from repealing the legal status of foreign students to study and work in the United States. The Thursday ruling by US District Judge Jeffrey White in Oakland prohibits the administration of canceling the legal status of international students without doing an individualized review and following the criteria set out in federal regulations. Earlier this year, the Trump administration ended the records of thousands of foreign citizens in the so -called student and the database of visitor information systems. The move came when the administration claimed to take steps to ward off foreign students with criminal records. Separately, the Trump administration on Thursday informed Harvard University that it recalls the school’s student and exchange program certification, which means it can no longer enroll international students. White’s command applies to individual students and not institutions. The cancellation of records in the Sevis database effectively means that the students no longer have legal status in the country, and that they are at risk of arrest, detention and even deportation. Last month, US officials again faced the canceled status of thousands of students in the face of various legal challenges. White wrote that he was concerned that officials were trying to avoid judicial investigations by ‘suddenly changing’ changing positions to resolve individual cases in courts across the country. “It is unclear how this game of a mole will end, unless defendants strive for their own compulsory regulations,” White wrote. Challengers in student Sevis cases argued that the mass terms were illegal and that the administration in at least some cases raised students who did not meet the standards of their status. arguing, “arbitrary and fickle”. on Bloomberg.com © 2025 Bloomberg LP
