Tamil Nadu: DCD stops manufacturing cough syrup, process of canceling license

Chennai, October 8 (IANS). In a serious revelation, the Drug Control (DCD) Division of Tamil Nadu acted strictly against the factory of pharmaceutical manufacturers of Sreesan. It has been found that ‘Coldrif Syroop’ (Group Number SR-13), manufactured by this unit on the Bengaluru highway, was falsified with a toxic chemical called Diethyleen Glycol (DEG), which could cause kidney failure and death. This case is related to the death of 14 children in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, who raised questions about the pharmaceutical industry across the country. The department immediately stopped the production of the factory and began canceling the manufacturing license. The department received the information from Madhya Pradesh Drug Control Authority at about 3:37 pm on October 1, 2025, when it was a government holidays in the state, but gave preference to public interest, deputy director S. On the Gurubharti instructions, the team of senior Dwelminpector started at 16:00. During intensive inspection, 39 severe and 325 major violations of amended schedule M (GMP) and Schedule L1 (GLP) of drug rules were found. Specifically, non-medicinal degree propylene glycol was used as a tool in the manufacture of the syrup, which was infected with deg and ethylene glycol. These chemicals are nephrotoxic (kidney damaged) and can be fatal for children. The team also came into action, and also collected samples from Coldrif syrup and four other syrups, namely Response D (SR-30), Response GL (SR-45), Response St. (SR-22) and Hepsandin (SR-46). Stock available at the factory is frozen to prevent further distribution. The samples were sent to the drug testing laboratory in Chennai, where testing was done on priority despite the holiday. An ongoing investigation on October 2 revealed further irregularities, which led to a state -wide warning. Distribution lists were sent to all medicine inspectors so that wholesale and retail levels could be seized. Odisha and Puducherry were also informed by e -mail. –Is SCH/DKP Share This Story Tags
