Tamil Nadu: Sales worth Rs 1.10 crore made in Arumuganeri goat market on Diwali

Chennai, October 18 (IANS). The festival of Diwali will be celebrated with great enthusiasm and pomp across the country on Monday. On the same occasion, sales worth around Rs 1.10 crore were made on Saturday ahead of Diwali in the Arumuganeri goat market near Tiruchendur in Tuticorin district of Tamil Nadu. This goat market of Arumuganeri is considered to be one of the oldest and most popular markets of South Tamil Nadu. This market is held every Saturday and Tuesday, where a large number of goat traders and buyers from the surrounding districts arrive. On normal days there is a good sale of native goats and sheep. This time, in view of the festival of Diwali, many activities were seen in the market since early morning on Saturday itself. In view of the festival, the crowd of traders and buyers was more than expected. Hundreds of traders from areas like Srivaigundam, Airal, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Tenkasi and Sivakasi came to the market to buy goats. Goats weighing 10 to 12 kg were the most sold in the market on this day. The price of one goat varied from Rs 15 thousand to Rs 20 thousand. Some rare goat breeds and goats were sold at even higher prices. According to traders, this time many breeds like indigenous goat, fancy goat, sheep and goat were sold in the market. Due to festive shopping ahead of Diwali, a tremendous shopping atmosphere was witnessed in the market. The process of auctioning and bargaining goats continued from morning till late evening. Local traders said that this year the price of goats has increased slightly compared to previous years, but still there was no decrease in buyers. Market committee sources said the sale of goats worth around Rs 1.10 crore was recorded in a single day, which is one of the biggest sales in recent years.
