Dehradun, October 4 (IANS). Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami formally launched the 50th sub-Junior National Basketball Championships at Dehradun’s Parade Ground on Saturday. The event is a proud and historical opportunity for the state, as Devbhoomi Uttarakhand presents this national competition for the first time. The Chief Minister congratulated the basketball federation of India and Uttarakhand Basketball Association on this successful organization. This prestigious championship lasts until October 10, in which more than a thousand players from 54 teams from 28 states of the country participate. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, chief minister, said the game also not only teaches entertainment, but also character building, patience, discipline and team spirit. Prime Minister Narendra Modi appreciated initiatives such as ‘Khelo India’ and ‘Fit India Movement’, which brought a new awareness to sports in the country and affects India worldwide new heights. Chief Minister Dhami said Uttarakhand, after the successful organization of the 38th National Games, was moving quickly as sports land. World class sports infrastructure is being developed in the state at a cost of Rs 517 crore. He announced that the Sports Legacy plan with 23 sports academies will soon be implemented in eight major cities. In addition, the first sports university is established in Haldwani and Women Sports College in Lohaghat. As for the new sports policy, the chief minister said it would benefit the players a lot, which will be successful under the guidance of Premier Modi. He said that among these important steps such as the government’s work, “Khiladi Promotional Scheme”, sports sets, state-level awards and 4 percent sports quota were taken to the winners of the national internal medal. Recently, outstanding players also awarded a Rs 50 Lakh on National Sports Day. On this occasion, the Chief Minister instructed to identify land for the Basketball Training Academy in Dehradun and arrange basketball exercises at the Sports University in Haldwani.
