The appointment of two major professors from Kaost in the United Nations Climate Report – ryan
Introduce two professors from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAST) as major authors in the seventh evaluation report of the United Nations IPCC (IPCC), which is the most prominent scientific reference to direct global climate work.
Associate Professor Sami Al -Ghamdi and Professor Hussein Hattit are among the 664 scientists representing 111 countries who contribute to preparing the report scheduled for 2029, which will draw the features of the next decade of climate policies.
These two appointments put the KAST in the most influential climate evaluation center in the world, and highlights the growing role of the university in the advancement of science with global influence.
Leadership in Global Climate Science
The IPCC is the United Nations Responsible Authority for Climate Change Science Assessment.
Since its founding in 1988, the commission has been issuing periodic scientific reviews used as a basis for formulating international climate policies. Its comprehensive reports are published every 5-7 years, and the cornerstone is considered to be in the United Nations climate negotiations, as governments and societies help understand the dangers of climate change and paths of adapting to them and mitigating them.
The seventh evaluation report (AR7) is prepared through three work teams: the first (WGI) is based on the physical scientific basis, the second (WGII) and is based on effects, adaptation, environmental fragility, and the third (WGIII) and depends on mitigating climate change. The reports of reports are scheduled to start in 2028, with the completion of its entirety in 2029.
Participating Professor Sami Al -Ghamdi – Second Team (Chapter Eight: Asia)
Professor Sami Al -Ghamdi, Kaost expert in sustainable urban development, infrastructure and environmental systems, was appointed as a major author of the eighth chapter (Asia) within the work of the second team.
This chapter focuses on assessing the various effects of climate change in the continent of Asia, including weaknesses, risks, adaptation strategies, dealing with losses and damage.
Professor Hussein Hattit – Third Team (Chapter Fifteenth: Paralysis, Divide and Risks of Removing Carbon dioxide)
Professor Hussein Hattit, a prominent expert at Kaost, was appointed in the field of energy resources and carbon administration in the underground classes, as a major author for the fifteenth chapter in the work of the third team.
This chapter deals with the technical, economic and environmental dimensions of the methods of removing carbon dioxide, including its usefulness, risks, ability to expand and its potential role in achieving zero neutrality or negative emissions.
Hatit specializes contributes to the areas of strengthening and carbon detention, its use and storage (CCUS) and the engineering of reservoirs in supporting one of the most prominent scientific axes related to mitigating the effects of climate change.
Support global decisions
Through their participation in preparing the seventh evaluation report of the International Climate Change, Al -Ghamdi and Hitt will contribute to providing discreet scientific evidence that contributes to directing international discussions and formulating future climate policies. This choice confirms the role of Kaost as a leading center for advanced research in the fields of climate, energy and sustainability, and transferring solutions from the shores of the Red Sea to the global scene.
