Why does Egypt strengthen the export of energy to Jordan despite their lack of location?
Despite the internal challenges facing Egypt in the energy sector, especially during the peak of demand in the summer months, Cairo made a remarkable decision to strengthen its export of electricity and gas to Jordan, amid one of the most turbulent regional periods. After the outbreak of the recent conflict between Israel and Iran, and its impact on gas supplies, Cairo decided to pump about 400 megawatts of electricity, in addition to 100 million cubic feet per day to Amman, in a move that is likely to carry economic and geopolitical reasons that exceed direct commercial stories. To understand these steps, we need to return to the roots from which this decision originated, and we know if these supplies will come at the expense of the local market? What messages these movements have on a very sensitive timing? 1) When did cooperation in the energy sector between Egypt and Jordan began? Egypt and Jordan have exchanged electrical energy since 1999, where the Jordanian electrical network is linked to the Egyptian electrical network with a 400km tension marine cable, extends across the Gulf of Aqaba with a length of 13 km and with a capacity of 500 megawatts, irakt, Iraqat, Syria, which includes Jordan, IRAQ, IRAQ, IRAQ, IRAQ. Lebanon, Palestine, Libya, in addition to Turkey, according to the Jordan Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources website. In January 2025, the two parties renewed this agreement for an additional year to contribute to increasing the reliability of the two networks and the exchange of electrical surplus, especially in the summer peak periods. Jordan’s Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Saleh Al -Kharabsheh, during a speech during the signing ceremony, emphasized the importance of the agreement in the promotion of electrical reliability and the development of energy infrastructure between the two countries. He pointed out that collaboration between the two sides is a “model to be followed in the 25 -year -old regional electrical connection projects.” Thereafter, it was emphasized that coordination and joint work continues to develop electrical connecting projects, the most important of which is to increase the capacity of the electrical connection line between the two countries, which will contribute to the achievement of sustainable development and the improvement of energy security in the two countries and the region. 2) How did the Israel and Iran war affect the energy of Egypt and Jordan? Last Friday – after aggravating rocket bursts with Iran – Israel ordered a temporary closure in the “Levichan” field, its largest gas fields, which expressed concern about the stability of energy supplies in Egypt and Jordan. To support the extent of the damage caused by the temporary stop in the Levichan field alone, it can be noted that it provided about 2.71 billion cubic meters to Jordaan, and according to the estimation of the Israeli Ministry of Energy in 2023, 6.29 billion cubic meters. The Israeli gas supplies informed Cairo of the reduction of gas pumping operations due to the closure of the “Leviathan” field, according to an Egyptian government official to “Al Sharq”. Egypt has mainly imported natural gas from Tel Aviv since 2020, as the amount is estimated at 800 million cubic feet per day. The ministries of electricity and oil in Egypt have announced the condition of ‘warning and emergency’ to counteract any lack of gas supplies, while in the summer revised several scenarios to secure fuel for power stations. On the other hand, the National Electricity Company in Jordan announced the activation of the previously approved emergency plan, which includes a temporary stop for gas supplies for factories connected to the main gas network, in light of the current regional escalation and the resulting decline in natural gas supplies. The company said in a statement on Monday, Monday, by the Jordan News Agency, that this procedure as a precaution comes within the implementation of the priorities of the spread specified in the emergency plan. The statement emphasized that this procedure is temporary, and it will be re -evaluated with the improvement of regional conditions and the stability of gas flow. 3) Why did Egypt bring gas and electricity supplies to Jordan after the outbreak of the war? Egypt has doubled electrical power sources to Jordan to score 400 megawatts daily this week, compared to between 100 and 200 megawatts before the outbreak of the war between Israel and Iran, according to 3 sources, including two governments to Al -Sharq. The step to strengthen Egypt for its energy exports to Jordan is driven by a number of political, economic and diplomatic considerations. At the political level, the escalation of tension in the region, especially between Iran and Israel, contributed to disrupting a large part of Israeli gas supplies, to the fear of targeting energy facilities, which Cairo asked to move quickly to fill the deficit. Economically, the collaboration between the two countries is based on a wide network of commercial agreements and coordination in the energy sector, the most prominent of which is an agreement signed last December, through which Jordan can benefit from the Egyptian infrastructure in the storage and floating storage operations and during the next two years. The two parties also recently discussed the possibility of buying a joint secretion ship to ensure the needs of the two countries against imported gas. At a diplomatic level, economic coordination became an important as in Cairo and Oman relations, especially through the meetings of the Joint Opper Committee, which became a platform to expand the cooperation areas. During the 32nd session in May 2024, the two countries approved a new package of agreements in the energy, food security and manufacturing sectors, according to the Jordanus’ Ministry and Trade Ministry. Even before the outbreak of the war between Israel and Iran, a government official in Cairo to Al -Sharq, who asked not to be mentioned, revealed that Egypt was preparing to start a new tender to choose a world consultant undertaking the tasks of reaching the effectiveness of the electrical connection line with Jordan. The project aims to implement a plan to increase the capacity three times in two phases, compared to the current capacity of 500 megawatts, which is exchanged via a 400 km fleet cable implemented in 1999. Egypt also attempts to connect a large project with a total capacity of 3000 megawats in two phas. To manage the first time for the first time, 1500 megawatts during the summer of 2025.4), does Egypt manage to compensate the lack of Israeli gas supplies to Jordan? It can be fully compensated by the international statistical “Statista” website that Jordan imports about 2.7 to 2.9 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Israel. In comparison, Egypt began pumping 100 million cubic feet per day to Jordan, according to two officials in Egyptian and Jordanian governments, told Al -Sharq. This means covering new Egyptian exports to Jordan for about 35% to only 38% of the country’s usual daily supplies. A Jordanian official told Al -Sharq that the import of gas from Egypt will continue to return to Israeli gas. 5) Is the Egyptian local market influenced by the decision to double energy exports to Jordan? The Egyptian rapid move comes, despite the country’s suffering of the lack of natural gas supplies, which caused an electricity crisis last summer. It urged the Egyptian government to stop providing natural gas to some industrial activities, including iron, and to activate an emergency plan to confront the stop of supplies. Egypt ran time to find alternative fuel supplies to avoid any power failure after escalation in the midst of the east stopped the gas flow of Israel. The government is preparing to start a tender this month to import up to one million tonnes of fuel oil, with the aim of receiving in August. This comes after a similar tender was recently proposed by the country to help the needs of electricity generation, according to Bloomberg. Also read: Egypt is running time to compensate for Israeli gas and avoiding the electricity crisis, but the interruption of Israeli gas for a long period threatens to disrupt the generation of electricity in the country. The government of President Abdel Fattah El -sisi began in a plan to avoid the lack of fuel the country saw during the previous summer seasons, when a leap in demand cut electricity to reduce loads worldwide, which provoked a great popular dissatisfaction in a country that is already suffering from high inflation. At a press conference of a television last Saturday, Prime Minister Mustafa Madbuly said: “There is no reduction this summer and the state is working on this promise; but what happened from a confrontation between Israel and Iran had direct effects on a large part of the gas stock that comes to Egypt and contributes to the provision of fuel stations.”
