The Ministry of Youth Program and Sports said on Monday that recent Reforms in Tax on Goods and Services (GST) will promote Fit India Movement and promote participation in sports and fitness activities. According to the ministry, the government has reduced GST from 18 percent to 5 percent at gym and fitness centers to make a healthy lifestyle economical. The ministry said: “It will make quality fitness facilities more accessible to citizens, especially urban professionals and youth.” The move will “promote more participation in fitness activities and preventative healthcare, which directly support the Fit India campaign goals. By reducing the costs, this improvement will enable more people to adopt a healthy lifestyle and build a strong culture of fitness across the country.” To make environmentally friendly transport more accessible and economical to citizens, the government has reduced GST from 12 percent to 5 percent on the bike and its parts. The ministry said: “The move is expected to promote more use of bicycle among students, young professionals and enthusiasts to fitness, and it will also promote sustainable and environmentally friendly dynamics solutions.” In addition, the rate of GST has decreased from toys to sports goods from 12 percent to 5 percent, it will facilitate access to ambitious and active players and all youth. This will promote more participation in indoor and outdoor sports and promote recreational activities between children and youth. The ministry said: “By making sports goods and toys more economical, these reforms will contribute to strengthening India’s sports ecosystem and will also help with the overall development of the country’s youth power.” The government reduced GST from 28 percent to 18 percent on two wheelers to 350 cents. This will provide considerable relief to students, young professionals and employees of the gig economy.
