India's renewable energy initiative is moving from speed to system strength
New Delhi, October 22 (IANS). India’s renewable energy initiative is moving towards building a robust, dispatchable and integrated system with rapid capacity addition, according to information given by the central government on Wednesday. India is moving from rapid capacity addition to focusing on system strengthening in its renewable energy transition, an official statement said. The press release from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy said that the country’s renewable energy sector will be defined by the strength, stability and depth of its systems. According to the ministry, India’s renewable energy capacity has grown more than fivefold in the last 10 years, from 35 GW in 2014 to more than 197 GW today and is moving towards the goal of reaching 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030. 500 GW,” the statement said. More than 40 GW of allocated projects are nearing completion of power purchase agreements (PPAs), power supply agreements (PSAs) or transmission arrangements. Recently, central and state agencies have awarded tenders for 5.6 GW and 3.5 GW respectively. Commercial and industrial consumers are also projected to add about 6 GW in 2025. Renewables energy capacity addition therefore takes place in several ways. The press release said India continues to add 15-25 GW of new renewable capacity annually despite global headwinds. This rate is one of the fastest rates in the world. Additionally, the GST structure and ALMM provisions have been redefined to stabilize costs, improve module reliability and scale efficiency in India’s mature promote solar manufacturing ecosystem. India’s grid is being redefined by a Rs 2.4 lakh crore transmission plan for 500 GW that will connect renewable-rich states to demand centers. Green energy corridors and new high-capacity transmission lines will reach more than 200 gigawatts of capacity, the release said. –IANS SKT/
