The Attorney General Tushar Mehta told the Supreme Court on Thursday (August 7, 2025) that the Maintenance Directorate (ED) black applies to the value of approximately Rs 23,000 crore to victims of financial fraud. According to a report, the Apex Law Officer made this statement before the special Bank of Chief Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma. The bank heard in an open court about the petitions that reconsidered the Supreme Court on the controversial decision of May 2. On May 2, the Supreme Court rejected JSW Steel’s Samadhan Yojana for Bhushan Steel and Power Limited (BSPL), which called it a violation of the insolvency and surveys (IBC). The court ordered the Liquidation of the BSPL under the IBC. On July 31, a bank, led by Chief Justice Br Gavai, withdrew the decision and decided to reconsider the revisions of it related to it. During the hearing on these petitions, an advocate also mentioned the investigation of the Directorate for Enforcement in the BPSL case. The Chief Justice took a pinch and said, “Directorate for Enforcations is also present here.” In response, the Attorney General said: “I want to see a fact that has never been said in any court before and that … the maintenance directorate Rs 23,000 crore (black money) and was given to the victims.” The legal officer said that the storytelling money did not remain in the government’s treasury and was given to the victims of financial crimes. Chief Justice Br Gavai asked, “What is the rate of punishment?” The Attorney General Tushar Mehta said that the criminal offenses in criminal offenses are also very low and that he cited the defects of the country’s criminal justice system as the main reason for this.
