Bangladesh: arrest of the prize -winner economist, action against other leaders
Dhaka, June 20 (IANS). The interim government led by Mohammad Yunus began on the leaders of Awami League. Former Bangladesh minister for planning Shamsul Alam was arrested by Dhaka police on Thursday. Award -winning economist Alam was also awarded the country’s second largest civic award ‘Ecush Medal’ in 2020 for his contribution to economics. He was also a professor at Bangladesh Agricultural University for 35 years, and also served as a senior secretary of the General Economics Division (GED) of the Planning Commission during the term of office of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) joint commissioner Naseul Islam, spoke to Bangladeshi Daily Business Standard. Reports show that the police have not yet confirmed on what basis it was arrested. On a question about the case under which Shamsul Alam was arrested, Islam said: “He is currently placed in the office of the Detective Branch (DB) on Minto Road. A case is registered against him and will be produced in court.” In the action on the Awami League, several party leaders were placed on police on Wednesday for questioning by the unforeseen interim government. A Bangladesh court appointed the former MP of the president of Chakaria Upazila and Awami League President Zafar Alam at 18 days in connection with seven separate cases. According to local media reports, the order was issued by investigators of Chakariya, senior judicial magistrate Anwarul Kabir after the petitions filed by investigators. In a separate development, a Dhaka Court on Wednesday ordered that the former minister of legislation be appointed in five days.
