Two Blue Vortex Introduces Mamushi’s New Twist on Naruto’s Shadow Clones

The world of Naruto has expanded well beyond its titular character taking on Shadow Clones as his signature technique. Other characters throughout the series have used variants of this technique, including those made of mud and wood, but few have presented a nefarious threat to Konoha or other villages.

However, in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, a new twist on this comes in the form of the sentient Divine Tree Mamushi, himself based on Bug from Kara. While his cruelty sets him apart from the other Divine Trees, Mamushi is more specifically unique in the ability to make an almost limitless set of copies of himself, known as “Division.”

Naruto’s Most Iconic Ability Gets a Dangerous Twist in Boruto

While not technically a Shadow Clone Jutsu, Mamushi’s Division technique is an inversion of Naruto’s own abilities, with the Divine Tree retaining all of his physical strength and chakra across limitless clones. By contrast, Naruto, despite massive chakra reserves, can generate a finite amount of clones, with too much usage being especially physically taxing on him.

The weakness for Mamushi that sets him apart, is that the intelligence of these multiple clones diminishes with each Division, making them more “animal-like” as described by Koji Kashin. While this means he won’t be as difficult to outsmart, he represents a dangerous strength in numbers, with a limitless army of feral Divine Tree-level adversaries being a scary prospect.

There’s no splitting of chakra…nor of power or physical strength. (…) The only real drawback is that as he creates more of himself, there’s a significant drop in intelligence.

– Koji Kashi

Mamushi, much like the other Divine Trees, is drawn to their counterparts’ connections, with him being drawn to Eida. Should he attempt to find her in Konoha, he would do everything he can to consume her and gain greater understanding of his existence. But one thing stands in the way of him totally annihilating Konoha.

Boruto’s Allies Are Planning a Trap for Mamushi in Konoha

Jura in Boruto Two Blue Vortex

Koji Kashin knows very well about Mamushi being drawn to Eida, and wishes to lure him into Konoha and draw out his Division ability. This would thus make Mamushi more malleable to Inojin’s new technique Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, whatever that may be. But it also eliminates Mamushi’s main advantage.

Koji’s play must also account for destroying Mamushi’s Rinnegan Eyes after letting him reach 20-30 clones, as he’ll be unable to multiply after losing them, and greater numbers makes him more susceptible to control.

Jura is confirmed by Koji to have taken a liking to Konoha, shown in docile panels eating dango and enjoying the local shops, likely as he expands his knowledge and enjoyment while waiting to find Naruto. He will not want Konoha to be destroyed, and would thus not participate in any fights. Mamushi, knowing his master’s desires, will similarly refrain.

As long as Boruto and Himawari aren’t part of this operation, Jura won’t be drawn there, so Inojin is crucial for this move. Mamushi is still drawn to Konoha for Eida, but will instinctively hold back, so as not to upset Jura. Mamushi is trapped, and his twist on this Naruto ability will be his undoing.
