Rescue Dog Beats 5 Year Old at Uno, As Kid Admits ‘He’s Good at This Game’ – ryan

A mom has captured the heartwarming moment she walked in on her 5-year-old son playing a game of Uno cards—with his rescue dog.

Whitney Beckett from Riner, Virginia, lives with her two children, Tommy and Addie, and their rescue, Kevin.

“Tommy refers to Kevin as his ‘puppy brother’ and he is just great with him and his older sister,” Beckett told Newsweek. “We’ve only had him for five months and he is just such a funny and goofy dog!”

On the face of it getting a dog on top of having young kids might sound like a lot to handle, but research suggests the benefits far outweigh any negatives.

A 2022 study published in the journal Preventive Medicine Reports found that children between the ages of two and five reaped a variety of benefits from living alongside a family dog.

By engaging with a canine companion through play and family walks, children not only benefited from increased physical activity and better sleep, but also a reduction in the amount of screen time.

Beckett—who sees the benefits Kevin brings on a daily basis—had been on the lookout for a new addition to the family ever since the sad passing of their previous dog last year. When she saw Kevin’s picture on the Floyd County Humane Society Facebook page, something just felt right.

“I could not stop thinking about him,” she said. “We found out that he had been picked up as a stray and was at the pound all summer, but nobody wanted him. When we met him in October, he was with a great foster family, and we pretty instantly fell in love with him.”

It’s a love that Kevin seems to reciprocate every day. “Kevin puts Tommy and Addie on the school bus every morning and lights up when they get home,” Beckett, a realtor, said.

Kevin is especially close to Tommy and, as a video Beckett posted to TikTok earlier this month, under the handle @HokieRealtorhas even been roped into playing Uno with him.

“Tommy is just constantly on the go and loves games,” Beckett said. “We had just come inside from playing with Kevin so he was taking a nap and Tommy built a pillow fort around him. I came back into the room to find them like this.”

Though he may be a newcomer to the game, Kevin seems to have picked it up quickly and even appears to be winning, having made Tommy draw four cards before adding a further two to his pile. Kevin, by contrast, appears to be holding just three cards and well on his way to victory.

Tommy is even heard on the video admitting to his mom: “He is good at this game.”

Beckett said she filmed the interaction because she thought it was “cute and sweet” and figured it might make a few people smile.

It’s certainly done that, with over 480,000 views and counting, as well as thousands of likes and comments.

And the official TikTok account for the game itself responded, with Uno commenting: “Kevin is iconic for this.”

Though it’s an undoubtedly sweet and funny clip, Beckett hopes that those watching are inspired at seeing how Kevin is with her kids and might one day “give a rescue a chance too.”

That’s what she did with Kevin and, as you can see, it’s paid off.
