Veteran actor Asrani passed away at the age of 84

Mumbai, October 20 (IANS). Famous comedian Govardhan Asrani passed away on Monday evening. He breathed his last at the age of 84. His last rites were also performed at Santa Cruz cremation ground in the evening. Only family and close people were present on this occasion. Information came to light that Govardhan Asrani’s health was not good. He was in the hospital for the last five days and died on Monday evening at the Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Juhu. Asrani was one of the longest active comedians of Indian cinema. In a career spanning more than five decades, he has worked in more than 350 films. He learned acting at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune and honed his skills. He then entered the Hindi film industry in the mid-1960s. Although he started with serious and supporting roles, Asrani’s comedic talent soon emerged. He became a prominent face of Hindi cinema in the 1970s and 1980s, often playing the roles of the lovable fool, the troubled clerk or the witty assistant. His comic timing and facial expressions made him a favorite actor of directors in films. He has played memorable roles in films like ‘Sholay’ and ‘Chupke Chupke’. He had a brilliant performance in the film ‘Sholay’, in which he played the role of a jailer impersonating Hitler. Asrani has worked in many different languages ​​including Gujarati and Rajasthani. He has also directed a few Hindi and Gujarati films. He did major comedy roles with actors like Mehmood, Rajesh Khanna and later Govinda.
