Amns India wants to reduce CO2 intensity below 2.2 tonnes of measure for green steel
New -Delhi, April 16 (PTI) Amns India, wants to take its CO2 intensity below 2.2 tonnes per ton finished steel in line with the government’s green steel tax economy, which is expected to be rolled out in FY27, senior officials said on Wednesday. At present, the CO2 emission -intensity of the company is 2.23 tonnes per tonne finished steel production, Ranjan Dhar, director and vice president -sales and marketing, and Arind Bodhankar Chief Sustainability Officer at Arcelor Mittal Nippon Steel (Amns) India said. To comply with the goal, Amns India takes different measures to produce 70 percent of the products using low-carbon-radiating technologies by the first quarter of FY27, senior managers said in a joint media interaction in the national capital. The reduction of emissions below the 2.2 ton mark will qualify Amns India for a 3-star rating under the green steel tax economy launched in December 2024 by Union Steel Minister HD Kumaraswamy. According to the ministry’s taxonomy, green steel must be defined in terms of the percentage of greenery of steel, produced with CO2 equivalent emission intensity of less than 2.2 tunes per tons of steel. If 1.6 tonnes of CO2 or less are released in the production of 1 ton completed steel, it will be considered 5-star-rated steel. On emissions in the region of 1.6 to 2 tons, the product will get a 4-star rating, while those with 2 to 2.2 tonnes of emissions levels will be assessed by 3-star. Amns India is expanding its total capacity to 15 mt from the current 9 MT with Q1 FY27. Currently, 65 percent of the Amns India’s steel capacity is derived from the directly reduced iron (DRI) route that uses natural gas. This process has a low carbon footprint. Furthermore, the ongoing expansion contains modern technologies that focus on reducing carbon emissions. “At the close to medium term, Amns India’s ability to align with this mandate will be supported by various strategic initiatives to pursue more sustainable steel production, including a renewable hybrid project by Am Green Energy, Andhra Pradesh, with Energy Storage Services of a jointly pumped Hydro storage facility. Carbon emissions, but will also offer environmental and cost benefits.
