8 Celebrity-Worn Jeans Trends PEOPLE Editors Are Wearing This Spring – ryan

No matter the time of year, there’s one tried-and-true style that’s a staple in most people’s closets: denim jeans. Lately, we’ve spotted Kelly Clarkson, Reese Witherspoon, and countless other celebrities breaking out breezy styles for spring. And it turns out PEOPLE editors are drawing inspiration from A-listers for the new season, too.

“Jeans are a spring, fall, and winter staple for me,” says Laura Gurfein, PEOPLE shopping director. “In the spring, I gravitate toward lighter washes and ripped styles.” Other editors are embracing airy flare and cropped styles, which we’ve spotted on Cindy Crawford and Gwyneth Paltrow, respectively. And comfortable silhouettes, like barrel and wide-leg, are making our closets.

From leg-elongating skinny-flare jeans to glitzy studded jean shorts, these are the denim trends PEOPLE editors (and celebrities) are trying out this spring — plus the exact jeans we’re buying from Spanx, Levi’s, Madewell, and more.

PEOPLE Editor Spring Jeans Styles

Skinny-Flare Jeans

Spanx

“When I spotted Meghan Markle in skinny-flare jeans back in February, my jaw hit the floor because the wide-leg trend had been going strong for years. However, the leg-elongating, slimming effect of the Duchess’ skinny-flare jeans made me want to give the trend a try, so this spring I’m adding these similar Spanx pants to my closet. They come with built-in compression, a high-rise waist, and a flared hem that looks breezy.” — Nicol Natale, shopping writer

Studded Jean Shorts

Reformation

“Ever since I started twinning with Jessica Alba in these Reformation jeansit’s become impossible to get dressed without them. So you can imagine how bummed I was when I realized the Arizona heat would soon make this impossible… until I remembered the sales associate told me they sold a shorts version with studs and all. Ding ding ding! I’m already saving up, but thankfully, they’re $60 less than their full-length counterpart, so it shouldn’t take nearly as long.” — Alyssa Grabinski, senior shopping writer

Wide-Leg Jeans

Joe’s

“I’m not quite ready to wear the very-hot-right-now barrel jeans all the stars from Michelle Williams to Julianne Moore are sporting, but I have gotten to the point of being open to a wider leg than I’ve worn before. I love this pair from Joe’s for being on-trend but not overly trendy — they will fit perfectly into my weekend jeans-and-tee wardrobe — and for coming in a petite version so I don’t have to hem six inches off just to wear them with my Gazelles.” — Alex Apatoff, managing editor, special integrated projects

Cropped Jeans

DL1961

“Cropped jeans are a classic, transitional denim style. Gisele Bündchen sported them this fall, and Reese Witherspoon was spotted last month in a cuffed pair. I love this cut-off style from DL1961 because it’s a true ‘cropped’ fit on my petite frame. The cut-off hem makes it feel appropriate for spring, and I can pair it with Chelsea boots on a rainy day or flip-flops on a sunny one.” — Erin Johnson, editorial director, content marketing

Baggy Jeans

Abercrombie & Fitch

“Rigid denim and I don’t get along — that’s why I followed street style tips from Sofía Vergara and Katie Holmes for spring. Baggy jeans are a comfortable yet stylish staple in my wardrobe as a tall and curvy woman because they’re roomy without looking frumpy. My all-time favorite pair is Abercrombie and Fitch’s Curve-Love Low-Rise Baggy Jeans, which is the denim equivalent to sweatpants, in my opinion. They’re super soft and slouchy for lasting comfort, but look far more polished than actual loungewear.” — Clara McMahon, senior shopping writer

Barrel Jeans

Madewell; People

“Desperate to prevent my denim preferences from giving away my elder millennial status, I hunkered down in a Madewell dressing room a couple of weeks ago and emerged with these darted barrel-leg jeans, spotted on the likes of Julianne Moore and Sandra Bullock. I like how they are roomy throughout the leg but still have some structure, and I don’t think they make me look like I’m trying too hard to fit in. (Right?) Pro tip: If you have wide hips and a booty like me, size up and bring the jeans to your tailor for a custom fit at the waist, like I did here.” — Laura Gurfein, shopping director

Kick-Flare Jeans

J.Crew

“TBH, I’ve been wearing the same three pairs of pants for three years now. My go-to pairs are no longer being made, so I need a denim refresh stat. I just ordered this J.Crew style, which I’m super excited to try on because the medium blue wash will easily transition into summer, and the cropped length is perfect for styling with sneakers and flats. Plus, I’ll be on trend since Bryce Dallas Howard just wore a nearly identical kick flare pair.” — Lindsey Greenfeld, senior shopping editor

Straight-Leg Jeans

Levi’s

“I have an on-again, off-again relationship with denim. When we’re ‘on,’ I return again and again to Levi’s Wedgie Straight Fit Jeans for their low-stretch fabric, high-ish rise, and unbeatable price-to-quality ratio (especially at 30 percent off, which they are now). And celebs like Meghan Markle and Reese Witherspoon are giving me fresh ideas on how to style them.” — Nicola Fumo, Senior Shopping Editor
