I’ve lived in the Northeast my entire life, and I absolutely love it. There are many reasons why, but chief among them? Fall. Every year when October rolls around, I get giddy. The crisp, cool breezes, the gorgeous foliage, a closet full of outerwear — they all bring me so much joy. Any day that requires a chunky sweater paired with a not-too-heavy topper is a good day in my book.
Given my affinity for autumn, I’ve purchased plenty of jackets over the years. Jeans? Check. Quilted? Check. But with the rich British countryside aesthetic trending these days, I found myself on the hunt for a barn jacket. I have similar styles, but I wanted something new that really nailed the off-duty royal look. I love Barbour’s waxed cotton designs, but spending $500 on a single coat? No way. I stumbled upon this field coat at LLBean that seemed promising, but then I checked the price. Still over $200. I threw caution to the wind, decided to do a quick search at Walmart, and what do you know? I found a $38 barn coat that didn’t look half bad.

This barn coat looks just as good in real life as it does in the photos — talk about a win! I’m excited to wear it on repeat with everything from jeans and leggings to dresses and skirts. It’s not lined, so it’s perfect for when the weather is cool but not yet cold.

The stars aligned, because there was a medium in stock that just so happened to be available for next-day delivery. I pounced and placed an order without thinking twice. I was excited and optimistic, but also fully prepared for a “you get what you pay for” situation. Turns out, I didn’t just like the Scoop barn coat — I really liked it.
When I unwrapped the jacket, I was impressed by the fabric. Some barn coats are heavy and stiff, but not this one. It has a rustic, durable feel, but it still drapes nicely and allows for easy movement. Another highlight? It’s full-length! It seems like everything is cropped these days — yes, even coats — so to find one that actually covers my bum was a huge win.
Perfectly oversized, plus a great neutral color that will complement everything in my closet.

Nor for sizing, I normally wear a small, but went with a medium for this style. Even though it’s designed to be oversized, I wanted to ensure there’d be plenty of room for a thick sweater underneath. For me, this was the right choice — I love the way it looks and that it’s not tight or constricting anywhere. But if you prefer a snugger fit, consider sticking with your usual size.
The last thing I’ll say about this gem? There are so many stylish details that make it look more expensive than it is. The corduroy collar, the tabs at the wrists, the perfectly placed pockets, the chic silver hardware — it all comes together to make one special piece. And for under $40, I just couldn’t keep it to myself.
Like me, many Walmart shoppers are seriously pleased with this pick.
“There’s no need to spend hundreds of dollars when you can get this bargain,” one wrote. “It’s made well and perfect for cool temperatures. It’s oversized in the body so when the weather gets colder, it would be really easy to wear a down vest under it. This is a win!”
Another reviewer added, “Superb quality and styling. Nice fabric. Will wear and wash well. Perfect for the cool Kansas fall evenings and mornings.”

This standout style is available in a wide range of sizes, but inventory keeps fluctuating. If you don’t see your size today, don’t lose hope — it may be restocked soon, so keep checking.
SP There’s a good-looking version for guys, too.
