11 off-broadway shows to see this fall
September is not even over yet, and autumn is already surprised by new performances in performances, shows start rehearsals or other shows that are sold out before they start. Although it is fairly simple to see which shows come to Broadway (what You can find here), It’s a little more complicated for New York City’s off-off Broadway scene.
But fortunately, I have more than a decade of theater experience in the city, and the willingness to go for theater in different districts. I have investigated the list of shows that are heading to NYC this fall.
I also omitted shows with celebrities in them, such as Hold my darling with the lead role of Adam Driver or the entire casting of Shit. Meet. Fan.because these shows sell themselves (although you can get a more comprehensive List with upcoming starry apertures here).
From original musicals by emerging composers to a play on an actual ship in Brooklyn to a new Dominique Morisseau Play about Haitian immigrants, here are the 11 shows I am particularly excited about.

The big gay jamboree (Orpheum -Theater)
The big gay jamboree Looks like a no-brainer to be excited: It was written by and interpreted Marla Mindelle, who also helped to create the still running and still creating-very-funny Titanic. But then I learned what it was about: a failed actor trapped in a golden era music in Bareback, Idaho. So it is Schmigadone Besides more queer. And Margot Robbie is one of the producers. Sign me up! Or rather take me to Bareback!
The big gay jamboree is currently working on January 19, 2025 (although it stretches, it can semend Mindelle as the Queen of Off-Broadway).

Good legs (The public theater)
If you loved James Ijames‘ Fat hamhis modern and strange tackle HamWhen it was on Broadway, you should be excited for his latest play Good legs. The play follows a black couple who bought a house in a modest neighborhood, and the questions that conveyed the decision. The play is considered a comedy, so I expect laughter and also a good bite that will stay long.
Good legs currently runs until October 27.

Magnificent Bird/Book or Travelers (Playwrights horizons)
At the 2024 Tony Awards, when Stereophonic Won Best Play, the artistic director of Playwrights Horizons, Adam Greenfield, got on stage to give a plea for more support for non-profit theaters. And what better way to support the theater ahead Stereophonic Off-Broadway as to buy tickets for his latest show. But it’s not just community service. The theater’s season opener is Magnificent Bird/Book or Travelers Written by composer Gabriel Kahanewhose chamber music February home Stay one of the most unnamed and touching musicals I have ever seen. His latest show is two musical pieces in repertoire and promises to be quite personal: Book of travelers follow Kahane while undertaking a 9,000 -mile train journey through America, and Beautiful bird is about the year he lived from line. If the musical is a triumph (which he promises to consider the whole run before it started), it might remind everyone to go offline and become grass.
Magnificent Bird/Book or Travelers Walk 24 September – October 13.

The wind and the rain (Vineyard theater and and Garde Arts)
The exciting theater pioneer and Garde Arts team up with Vineyard Theater to host their latest show: The wind and the rain. The show will take place in Red Hook, Brooklyn. It will start in one place (the Waterfront Museum Barge) and end in another (a local bar named Sunny’s that has been owned by one family for more than 100 years). This play by Sarah Gancher Promise to do what I always love exciting theater: To teach audiences about the places they live and the urban areas they have not yet investigated. If you do not live in Red Hook and have to go there, why not take anything ambitious and transport?
The wind and the rain Walk 28 September – October 27.

Drag: The musical (New World Phases)
The category is: Musical Theater! If you are an avid follower of Rupaul’s drag racethen pull on your heels and go down to Drag: The musical. Not only is it written together by Drag Race All-Stars The winner Alaska Thunderfuck (who is also in it) is the show filled with Queens: Luxx Noir London, Bre Jackson and Eddie Korbich. The show follows two competitive wear bursts that fight for survival. The show had a well -received run in Los Angeles earlier this year (and you can get a preview by listening to The casting album). And if you love and Boy Bands, you are a delicacy because former new children on block member Joey McIntyre are also in the cast.
Drag: The musical Start with his open run on October 21.

Bad kreyol (Signature Theater Company and Manhattan Theater Club)
A new play from Dominique Morisseau (Skeleton crew, Is not too proud) is always a cause for celebration. But this play promises to be an event: it’s about a Haitian American family and Haiti’s ominous relationship with America. Morisseau worked on this play long before the current wave of disinformation against Haitian immigrants from the Trump campaign, but her game can’t come at a better time than a way to facilitate a group of people who have become unfairly angry over the past few days. And because it’s Morisseau, expect some poetic phrases in the play that will turn your head in your head for days.
Bad kreyol Walk October 8 – December 1st.

We live in Cairo (New York Theater Workshop)
I saw an early workshop of We live in Cairoa musical about the Egyptian Revolution in 2011 which launched the Arab Spring in 2015. It was composed by brothers Daniel Day and Patrick Lazour. Even in a lecture with scriptures and music stalls, I was struck by the ambition of its work and its musicality. The show made its premiere in the American Repertory Theater in 2019 and will now finally hold a New York run via New York Theater Workshop, a sign of larger ambitions for a show. And led by The WHO’s Tommy title player (and upcoming star) Ali Louis Bourzguito tell a story that many Americans think they know, but only saw the surface, how can you not be excited?
We live in Cairo Walk 9 October – November 24th.

Give me carmelita tropicana (Soho Rep)
Like many in the theater community, I was afraid when I heard that Soho representative had to move out of their long -standing venue in Walker Street. I had countless life -changing theater experiences in that space: Octorone per Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, Marie Antoinette by David Adjmi, Fairview by Jackie Sibblies Drury, and, more recently, Jerk adams by Becca Blackwell. What is New York City without the avant-garde gravel of Soho Rep? Fortunately, the company will continue with the second phase of Playwrights Horizons, but I’m going to miss grabbing a Boba in Chinatown before going to a Soho Rep -Show. Fortunately, Alina Troyano and the newly Marked Tony winner Branden Jacobs-Jenkins sends the Walker space with a bang with a bang Give me Carmelita tropicana, which promises to be a meta exploration of the center of the theater and real estate in New York. I am RSVP-sing with this party.
Give me carmelita tropicana Walk October 23 – December 1st.

The Blood quilt (Lincoln Center Theater)
The blood deck bed is not a new play. In fact, this family drama by Katori Hall (The mountain top) Promoted the first time in 2015. But so far it has not been seen in New York. And it’s worth being excited. The play follows four sisters reunited to create a cover bed in honor of their deceased mother. And the show is very personal for Hall, she is a quilter herself who has learned how to cover her grandmother. So crafts and play lovers unite!
The blood deck bed Walk 30 October – December 29.

We are your robots (Theater for a new audience and Rattlestick Theater)
With the current heated talks around AI (including a Broadway play about it), the last thing you want to do is perhaps a musical about robots. However, composer Ethan Lipton combined existential anxiety and science fiction before it was nice. His musical in 2012 No place to go followed a man whose work was outsourced to Mars. In his latest musical, directed by regular employee (and Enough director) Leigh SilvermanLipton and his orchestra play robots who ask, “What do people want from their machines?” I expect it to be a funny, sardonic, yet moving time.
We are your robots November lasts 7 – December 8.

The animal (Ars new)
As a fan of Bardcore, I am very excited for The animal. Not only is the always adventurous ars Nova that produces the show with music, but they create an upcoming company, on the Rocks Theater Co.. The show promises to combine the medieval and modern aesthetics into a “twisted comic puppet competition of consumption, corruption and the end of humanity.” With Ars Nova manufacturing it will be memorable and nothing like you have seen before.
The animal Walk 7 October – November 9.

Bonus: Award -winning shows returning to NYC
There is really too much going on to be summarized in just ten shows. But if you have overwhelmed yourself with choices, you can also go to a show that had a previous run in the city and now return for an encore. Those shows include:
- The horror-musical Teeth, which will make you both laugh and shrink (note the stage blood). If you are wondering or Teeth is right for you, example of the cast album with songs of Anna K. Jacobs ‘nd Tony winner Michael R. Jackson (A strange loop).
- The six -hour verbal reading of The big gatsby call Salt. This is probably the faithful Hole Adjustment What you will ever see, and this latest run in the public theater is the final excursion of production to more than a decade of performances around the world.
- Ragtime against New York City Centerfor the musical theater fans and for people who want to be after a Broadway revival, or who want to see an all-Star role division (led by Tony winner Joaquina Kalukanage and Joshua Henry) Perform the modern classical musical.
- Our class—Was who had a well-received, sold Run earlier this year and an encore run at Classic Stage Company Until November 3, the play by Polish author Tadeusz Słobodzianek was based on the massacre of the Jewish population in 1941 in the Polish city of Lviv.
