West Bengal: Eight arrested in Murshidabad kidnapping case
Kolkata, October 16 (IANS). Police in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district on Thursday arrested eight people in connection with the kidnapping of Lal Chand Mandal, a local grocer, in Domkal. The accused include a civic volunteer and an aide of a late Trinamool Congress MLA. According to a senior police officer, the reason for the kidnapping was a land dispute. Mandal was safely rescued after swift police action. Initially, seven suspects were arrested including Mominul Islam, Suman Mandal, Ajmeer Mandal, Iman Ul Kabir, Ansarul Ansari, Nayan Shaikh and Humayun Kabir. All of them are residents of Domkal. Humayun Kabir is a civilian volunteer posted at Domkal Police Station. During interrogation, the name of the eighth accused Mohammad Ali Mubarak came up. Mubarak is believed to be a relative of the late Domkal MP Zafikul Islam. He was later arrested. The police also seized four vehicles that were suspected to have been used in the crime. A senior officer of the Murshidabad police district said, “We are investigating the role of everyone in the abduction. The victim has been rescued and further investigation is on.” Trinamool Congress president Hajikul Islam’s Domkal block reacted to the incident. “The administration is actively investigating the matter.
