What is the story of the incarnation of Lord Dhanvantari?

Religion What is the story of incarnation of Lord Dhanvantari? According to the Puranas, earlier both gods and demons struggled to achieve immortality. To achieve immortality, they decided to raid Kshir Sagar together. Using the Mandar mountain as a churning ring and Vasuki serpent as a rope, the churning of the ocean was started. During the churning, 14 precious gems and objects emerged from the sea one after the other. At the last of these jewels Lord Dhanvantari appeared with a golden pot filled with nectar in his hands. He is believed to have been an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who seems to have imparted the knowledge of Ayurveda to mankind. Thus, because of his appearance carrying the pot of nectar from the churning of the ocean, he was called the god of health and the father of Ayurveda. This day of appearance of Lord Dhanvantari occurs on the Trayodashi date of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month, which is celebrated as Dhanteras today.
