What to watch this week: 'Nishaanchi', 'Sabar Bonda' and more
Sabar Bonda Rohan Parashuram Kana wade’s marathi film, which won the prestigious World Cinema Grand Jury Prize on the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, gets a welcome theater release in India. Anand (Bhushaan Manoj) returns to his ancestral village to perform the last rituals of his father, and reunite with an old friend, Balya (Suraaj Suman). Sabar Bonda (‘cactus pears’) is a rare film to explore gay relationships in rural India. It does it with honesty and softness, which shows the same kind of progressivity as a mainstream film as groundbreaking social service. (In theaters) a still of ‘Nishaaschi’. Nishaaschi Twin Brothers Babloo and Dabloo (Aaishvary Thackeray) work with dancer Rinku (Vedika Pinto) to rob banks in Kanpur. It’s one of two Anurag Kashyap films this year; The other, Monkey in A Cage, recently promoted at the Toronto International Film Festival. (In theaters) a still of ‘mirage’. The director of Mirage Drishyam, Jeethu Joseph, returns with another thriller for the big screens. Based on a story written by Aparna R. Tarakad, the Malayalam film deals with an investigative journalist looking for answers. Aparna Balamurali and Asif Ali lead the cast. (In theaters) a still of ‘Boonsg’. Boong, an early boy named Gugun Kipgen, wants to find his father, who stopped all communication with his family in Imphal. The debut film of Lakshmipriya Devi is presented in Manipur in the 1990s, which unfolds against a background of stimulating political tension. (In theaters) a still of ‘Jolly LLB 3’. Jolly LLB 3 The franchise that started as an Arshad Warsi comedy and apparently passed on to Akshay Kumar is now returning with both actors playing their respective unorthodox lawyers from the two films. Directed by Subhash Kapoor and co-starring Rolrita Rao. (In theaters) a still of ‘black rabbit’. Black Rabbit The owner of a high-end New York restaurant finds his world thrown in chaos when his loose canon brother arrives. This new horror series plays Jude Law and Jason Bateman.
