Who is India’s ‘Birdman’? Birds Science in India Today is a systematic stream, the greatest credit for this is to the bird and naturalist Salim Ali called ‘Birdman’ of India. Salim, born in Mumbai in 1896, has been very deeply interested in birds since childhood. His journey on bird science was awake after seeing a sparrow in childhood. Salim has zoology at the St. Xavier’s College studied and worked as a guide in the Museum of Bombay Natural History Society. Salim told people as a guide to protected birds. Salim’s interest in birds has increased so much that he decided to go to Germany and do research with the famous bird scientist Irwin stress. This time was very special for Salim. He learned a lot about birds. Salim has achieved effectiveness in identifying bird species and behavioral studies. He gained notoriety when he published a research article in 1930 describing the nature and activities of the ‘Vivar’ bird. This article made him boast in the field of bird science. Salim wrote several books on birds during his lifetime. The prominent of this is ‘The Book of Indian Birds’. People interested in birds have a special attachment for their books. Along with a bird scientist, Salim was also a nature expert. He has led in many movements related to wildlife and bird conservation in India. He played an important role in the rescue of the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary. Salim Ali, one of the first scientists to have a systematic bird survey in India and abroad, was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1958 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1976.
