The police here have registered a case of sedition against folk singer Neha Singh Rathore on a complaint that her provocative social media posts that target a specific faith community in the aftermath of the Pahalgam tragedy could harm the country’s unit. Last week, the complainant referred to the execution-like murder of 26 people, mostly tourists, in Pahalgam by terrorists after allegedly asking for their religious commitment, which made the whole country mourn and fighting for the blood of the perpetrators. “In this situation, singer and poet Neha Singh Rathore, with her Twitter (now X) handle @Nehafolksinger, made some offensive positions that could adversely affect national integrity and made repeated attempts to encourage one community against another based on religion,” said complainant Abhay Pratap. The complaint is registered with the Hazratganj police station in Lucknow. Based on the complaint, police registered a case against the folk singer on various charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including the attempt to promote sectarian hostility, disturbing public tranquility and jeopardize the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India, police added that she was also discussed under the information technology law. Although BNS does not explicitly mention that the sedition is specified in the Indian Criminal Code Division 124A in the colonial era, the new criminal code deals with similar charges of the at risk of the sovereignty, unity and integrity of the country under section 152.
