Woman Reveals Secret She Kept for Four Years—Until Boyfriend Proposed – ryan

A woman has gone viral for keeping her cooking skills quiet for years—until her boyfriend proposed.

Ashton Langford, 27, lives in Australia, where she works as a nurse and online content creator.

She is currently making plans for major celebrations after her boyfriend of four years, Tom, proposed. At the same time, she’s experiencing going viral, after posting a video to her TikTok account, @ashtonlangford_, announcing the news.

And as she admitted to Newsweek: “The reaction really surprised me—I’ve never had a video get that many views.

“I just thought it was a funny TikTok, not that deep, but some people got so mad in the comments.”

In the clipLangford carries a glass of red wine, and shows a sparkling engagement ring to the camera, followed by a hearty-looking dish in a baking tray.

Writing over the video revealed: “Told him I couldn’t cook for four years. He proposed. I start cooking every night.”

Adding her fiancé’s reaction was “wtf so you can cook?” she finished: “Ladies! Save your best play for the grand final!”

Ashton Langford didn’t reveal she could cook until her boyfriend proposed.

As Langford described it in the caption: “He unlocked level wifey.”

Langford’s light-hearted video had a big reaction, racking up more than 8.9 million views and 1.5 million likes since being posted on April 5, as the internet was divided in its response.

One accused her of “sexism” towards men, while another argued it “implies cooking is the duty of the wife,” and another declared it was “double standards.”

Others, however, agreed with Langford’s stance, as one declared: “I’m not cooking for a man unless I have a ring on my finger.”

Another shared her story of burning frozen food, until “we were married for a year and I busted out Xmas dinner with a perfect beef sirloin roast and impressed his chef father.”

It wasn’t just cooking either, as one user admitted: “Told him I was broke when I had $150k in savings and a six-figure job.”

In Langford’s case, she explained to Newsweek: “The reality is I haven’t been that good at cooking during our relationship, but (I’ve) been trying a lot harder lately to make much nicer dinners for him to come home to because he has such a physically demanding job.”

“And (he) deserves it,” she added. “Even more so now that he’s proposed, haha.”

Her video divided opinion, with some saying it was unfair but others admitting they did the same or similar things.

According to wedding experts The Knot’s 2024 Jewelry and Engagement Study, 30 percent of couples dated for two years or less before getting engaged, while 53 percent dated between two and five years before popping the question.

Seventeen percent were together for six or more years before taking the next step.

Langford said her now-fiancé “thought the TikTok was funny,” and “he’s loved coming home to some more special dinners lately.”

“At the moment we are just living in the engagement bubble and having an engagement party soon to celebrate with all our friends and family,” she said.
