Women's World Cup: Sri Lanka's losing streak continues, South Africa defeated by 10 wickets

Colombo, October 17 (IANS). Co-host Sri Lanka’s losing streak continues in the Women’s World Cup 2025. Sri Lanka lost by 10 wickets in the match against South Africa at the R Premadasa Cricket Stadium on Friday. The rain-hit match was played in 20-20 overs instead of 50. Sri Lanka won the toss and batted first, scoring 105 runs for 7 wickets. For Sri Lanka, Vismi Gunaratne scored 34 runs off 33 balls. Besides, Chamari Atapattu scored 11, Harshitha Samarawickrama 13, Kavisha Dilhari 14, and Nilakshika Silva 18 runs. For South Africa, Mlaba took 3 wickets, Masabata Klaas 2 wickets, and Nadine de Klerk 1 wicket. South Africa achieved the target of 121 by scoring 125 runs without losing any wicket in 14.5 overs and won the match by 10 wickets. Captain Laura Wolvaardt scored an unbeaten 60 from 47 balls with the help of 8 fours and Tanzeem Britts scored an unbeaten 55 runs from 42 balls with the help of 4 fours and 2 sixes. Laura Wolvaardt was named player of the match. It was Sri Lanka’s third defeat in the fifth match. Two matches were washed out due to rain. Sri Lanka have 2 points only because the match was canceled due to rain. Despite co-hosting and playing every match in Colombo, Sri Lanka’s performance in the World Cup was very disappointing and the team failed to win a single match. Sri Lanka is in seventh place in the standings. With this victory, South Africa moved up to second place in the standings. It was South Africa’s fourth win in its fifth match.
