The commemoration of World Food Day 2025 calls for global cooperation to create a future that is peaceful, sustainable, prosperous and food secure. By working together, across governments, organisations, sectors and communities, we can transform the agri-food system to ensure that everyone has access to healthy diets, living in harmony with the planet. The agri-food system is facing unprecedented challenges. Conflict, the impact of extreme weather and climate events, economic shocks and rising inequality are putting increasing pressure on our agricultural land, the water we rely on and the biodiversity that sustains life. Supply chains remain fragile, and the impact of disruptions is felt in homes, markets and fields around the world. In some places, the level of food insecurity is very serious. An estimated 673 million people live in hunger. Elsewhere, rising obesity rates and widespread food waste point to an unbalanced system – where food abundance and scarcity coexist, often side by side.
