The police say that after receiving the information, they reached the spot and rescued the youth from the crowd. Sudhakar Singh Parihar, commander of the Jayant outpost, said that the youth appeared mentally disturbed and that he could not identify himself properly nor could he say the reason for his arrival. Initial investigation revealed that the allegation of child theft is completely unfounded. The police handed over the youth to the Child Welfare Committee and began further investigation. The young man came looking for work. Police officers appealed to the people not to pay attention to rumours, to immediately report any suspicious situation to the police and not to take action themselves. He said attacking someone without investigating such matters is a criminal offence. Local people say a rumor was spread in the area about some people from Gaya district who were looking for a child lifter. Because of this rumour, the young man was arrested. It was learned that the young man had come to Singrauli from Gaya in Bihar with his seven companions. When he was roaming around the area looking for work, some people stopped him and started beating him. Strict action will be taken against the culprits. The youth told the police that he had come to Singrauli from Bihar in search of a livelihood due to the poor financial condition of his family. But because of rumours, he was considered a child lifter and people made him a victim of violence without any investigation.
