As India gears up to celebrate its 77th Republic Day on January 26, the annual parade on Kartavya Path in New Delhi promises to be one of the most striking in recent memory. This year’s celebrations are shaped by a mix of historic firsts, cultural showcases and powerful symbols of India’s progress.
For the first time ever, Indian cinema will have its own dedicated tableau, created by acclaimed filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The special presentation honours cinema as a central part of India’s cultural identity, recognising its influence on storytelling and national consciousness.

Military might and unique contingents
The parade will also reflect India’s evolving defence capabilities. Among the highlights is the debut of the Bhairav Light Commando Battalion, a newly raised infantry unit with rapid-response capacity. Alongside them will be an animal contingent from the Remount and Veterinary Corps, featuring Bactrian camels, Zanskar ponies, raptors and Indian-breed Army dogs, a first for the parade that symbolises how animals contribute to defence operations in extreme terrains.

These additions come as part of a broader effort to showcase not just traditional marching columns but also India’s modernised military and its strategic capabilities. The event will also include 30 tableaux from states, union territories and ministries.
Beyond military displays, this year’s parade carries deep cultural themes. The overarching theme for Republic Day 2026 celebrates 150 years of “Vande Mataram,” reflecting the enduring spirit of unity, courage and national pride expressed in art, music and public discourse. Videos, paintings, floral decorations and an unveiled banner dedicated to the theme will line the Kartavya Path.
