Saudi Arabia’s Ally Somalia Ends All UAE Deals Amid Somaliland Tensions | Firstpost Africa
The Federal Government of Somalia has officially terminated all military, economic, and port agreements with the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Citing the need to protect national sovereignty, Mogadishu’s move follows a series of diplomatic provocations involving the breakaway region of Somaliland. The rift is intensified by reports of the UAE “quietly” recognising Somaliland’s independence—accepting its passports while blocking Somali visas—following Israel’s landmark recognition of the territory. This diplomatic fallout is further complicated by the deepening rivalry between Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Riyadh has recently accused Abu Dhabi of facilitating the escape of Yemeni separatist leaders through Somalia, drawing Mogadishu into the broader West Asian power struggle.
