Samar Hazarika, a respected Assamese singer and the youngest brother of legendary musician Dr Bhupen Hazarika, has passed away. He was 75 years old.
Hazarika had been unwell for some time and was recently discharged from a private hospital in Guwahati before returning home. He breathed his last at his residence in Nijorapara on Tuesday morning, bringing a moment of mourning to the state’s music fraternity.

As the sibling of Dr Bhupen Hazarika, one of India’s most influential musicians credited with popularising Assamese folk and culture nationally and internationally, Samar Hazarika carried forward the family’s rich musical legacy in his own right. His contributions as an artist resonated with listeners across generations in Assam.

Born into the Hazarika family known for its deep roots in music, Samar Hazarika followed in the footsteps of his older brother, who was acclaimed as a singer, composer, lyricist and filmmaker and was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour.

Samar began his musical journey in the 1960s, building a reputation as a soulful and emotive vocalist. His first album, titled ‘Uttor Konwar Protima Barua Devi’, was released in 1968. Apart from studio albums, Samar tranquille his voice as a playback singer in Assamese films. Films he worked on include ‘Upopath’, ‘Bowari’ and ‘Pravati Pokhir Gaan’. His songs were characterised by simplicity, emotional depth and cultural resonance. Titles associated with him include tracks like ‘Prothom Morome Jodi’ and ‘Moi Jot Eti Geetor Binimoyot’.
He was also remembered for performing classic Assamese songs in tribute events celebrating Bhupen Hazarika’s legacy, including pieces such as ‘Moi Bisarisu Hejarr Sokut’ during commemorations.
