Elderly parents who often face humiliation from their children and are left isolated will now get a major relief as the Telangana government has announced stern action against state government employees who mistreat and neglect their parents.

While announcing Sankranthi welfare measures, Telangana chief minister Revanth Reddy mentioned that if elderly parents lodge complaints against their children who hold government jobs, they will face a 10 per cent salary deduction. Reddy also highlighted that the 10 per cent will be transferred directly to parents’ bank accounts. The state goverment plans to introduce a fresh law to address the same issue.

Currently, Assam is the only state with a similar law in force, following the government’s implementation of the PRANAM Act, which permits salary deductions from government employees who neglect their dependent parents. If Telangana, under CM Reddy, passes the bill, then it will become the second state to implement the provision under law.

Neglect parents and pay the value

The Telangana government has decided to intervene to ensure dignity and security for parents, particuary elderly. CM Reddy on Monday (January 12) announced that his government plans to introduce a law to deduct 10-15 per cent of the salaries of state government employees who do not support their old-age parents financially.

“We are introducing a fresh bill in the Assembly. If any state government employee is found neglecting the well-being of their parents, the government will deduct 10 to 15 per cent of their salary and deposit it directly into their parents’ account,” mentioned the CM while speaking at a public event

Moneycontrol quoted CM as saying that a draft bill will be prepared soon and presented in the upcoming Budget session of the Assembly. Reddy defended the government’s action, saying that intervention was necessary as moral responsibility was being ignored. He continued, “Employees should ensure that some part of their salary reaches their parents, especially when they are ageing.”
