राजस्थान यूनिवर्सिटी में छात्र संघ चुनाव की शुरुआत साल 1967 में हुई थी, इस साल आदर्श किशोर सक्सेना छात्र संघ अध्यक्ष बने, सक्सेना आगे चलकर प्रदेश के वित्त सचिव भी बने। आरयू के छात्र संघ अध्यक्षों में सक्सेना ही है जो एकमात्र ब्यूरोक्रेट बने, सक्सेना के बाद साल 1974 तक ज्ञान सिंह चौधरी, हुकुम सिंह, भरत पंवार, विजय प्रभाकर, विमल चौधरी अध्यक्ष बने। साल 1974 में कालीचरण सराफ ने चुनाव जीता और छात्र संघ अध्यक्ष बने। ये वसुंधरा राजे कैबिनेट में मंत्री रह चुके हैं और वर्तमान में बीजेपी के वरिष्ठ नेता हैं। कालीचरण के बाद 3 साल तक चुनावों पर देश में इमरजेंसी के कारण प्रतिबंध लगा दिया गया। साल 1978 में जब चुनाव हुए तो राजेंद्र राठौड़ छात्र संघ अध्यक्ष बने। पूर्व नेता प्रतिपक्ष और छह बार के विधायक राजेंद्र राठौड़ ने भी अपने राजनैतिक करियर की शुरुवात राजस्थान यूनिवर्सिटी के छात्र संघ से ही की थी। राठौड़ की गिनती वर्तमान बीजेपी के सबसे कद्दावर नेताओं में की जाती है।
राठौड़ के बाद साल 1979 में महेश जोशी छात्र संघ अध्यक्ष बने, जो जयपुर की हवा महल विधानसभा से विधायक और पिछली गहलोत सरकार में कैबिनेट मंत्री भी रहे हैं। साल 1980 में राजपाल सिंह शेखावत ने इलेक्शन में जीत हासिल की, ये जयपुर की झोटवाड़ा सीट से विधायक और भैरोंसिंह शेखावत सरकार में मंत्री रह चुके हैं। इसके बाद साल 1981 का इलेक्शन रघु शर्मा ने जीता जो पिछली कांग्रेस सरकार में विधायक और हेल्थ मिनिस्टर रह चुके हैं। इनके बाद वर्ष 1981 के बाद देश में बिगड़े हालातों के चलते 1987 तक चुनावों पर रोक लगा दी गई, इस बीच यूनिवर्सिटी में एक बार छात्र संघ चुनाव हुए जिसमे चंद्रशेखर ने बाजी मारी थी। इसके बाद साल 1989 के इलेक्शन में प्रवेंद्र शर्मा ने और 1991 के इलेक्शन में अखिल शुक्ला ने आरयू फतेह किया। साल 1992 में प्रताप सिंह खाचरियावास दावेदारी पेश कर चुनावों में जीत हासिल करते हैं। खाचरियावास पिछली कांग्रेस सरकार में मंत्री भी रह चुके हैं और वर्तमान में कांग्रेस के शीर्ष नेता है। 
खाचरियावास के बाद साल 1993 में जितेंद्र श्रीमाली आरयू के छात्र संघ अध्यक्ष पद पर काबिज होते हैं। इसके बाद वर्ष 1994 में सोमेंद्र शर्मा ुर साल 1995 के चुनावों में महेंद्र चौधरी बाजी मारते हैं। चौधरी नागौर की नावा विधानसभा से दो बार विधायक भी रह चुके हैं। चौधरी के बाद साल 1996 के चुनावों में श्याम शर्मा बाजी मारते हैं। शर्मा के बाद साल 1997 में हनुमान बेनीवाल अध्यक्ष पद के लिए दावेदारी पेश करते हैं और जीत भी हासिल करते हैं। हनुमान बेनीवाल का नाम राजस्थान यूनिवर्सिटी के सबसे दबंग छात्र नेताओं की लिस्ट में आता है। तत्कालीन भैरोंसिंह शेखावत सरकार के खिलाफ छात्र हितों के लिए संघर्ष करने से आधी रात में जेल जाने और जमानत होने तक हनुमान बेनीवाल की छात्र राजनीति से जुड़े कई किस्से मौजूद हैं। 

हनुमान बेनीवाल के बाद अगले साल यानि 1998 में रणवीर सिंह गुड़ा अध्यक्ष बनते हैं, रणवीर सिंह उदयपुरवाटी के पूर्व विधायक और कैबिनेट मंत्री राजेंद्र गुड़ा के भाई हैं। साल 1999 में राजकुमार शर्मा छात्र संघ चुनावों में बाजी मारते हैं, जो झुंझुनू की नवलगढ़ विधानसभा से दो बार के विधायक और कैबिनेट मंत्री रह चुके हैं। इसके बाद साल 2000 में अशोक लाहोटी अध्यक्ष पद पर दावेदारी पेश कर जीत हासिल करते हैं। सांगानेर विधानसभा से पूर्व विधायक और जयपुर के मेयर पद पर रह चुके अशोक लाहोटी ने भी अपने करियर की शुरुवात आरयू की स्टूडेंट पॉलिटिक्स से ही की थी। भाजपा ने इस बार के चुनाव में इनका ही टिकट काटकर सीएम भजनलाल को मैदान में उतारा था। अशोक लाहोटी के बाद साल 2001 में नगेंद्र सिंह शेखावत और इनके बाद साल 2002 में पुष्पेंद्र भारद्वाज छात्र संघ अध्यक्ष बनते हैं। पुष्पेंद्र कांग्रेस पार्टी की टिकट पर सांगानेर विधानसभा से एमएलए का चुनाव भी लड़ चुके हैं। 

इनके बाद साल 2003 में जितेंद्र मीणा अध्यक्ष पद हेतु दावेदारी पेश कर चुनाव में जीत हासिल करते हैं। इसके बाद साल 2004 के चुनावों में राजपाल शर्मा अध्यक्ष निर्वाचित होते हैं, जो वर्तमान में कांग्रेस के पदाधिकारी हैं। साल 2005 से 2010 तक एक बार फिर चुनावों पर प्रतिबंध लग जाता है, जो साल 2010 में फिर से शुरू होते हैं। इस बार के चुनावों में मनीष यादव बाजी मारते हैं, जो एनएसयूआई के पूर्व नेशनल सेक्रेटरी और जयपुर की शाहपुरा विधानसभा से विधायक भी रह चुके हैं। मनीष यादव के बाद अगले साल यानि 2011 में आरयू को प्रभा चौधरी के रूप में अपनी पहली महिला प्रेसिडेंट मिलती है। प्रभा के बाद साल 2012 में राजेश मीणा अध्यक्ष निर्वाचित होते हैं, मीणा वर्तमान में बीजेपी के नेता है और जमवारामगढ़ से इलेक्शन लड़ने की तैयारी में है। 
इसके बाद साल 2013 में कानाराम जाट बाजी मारते हैं और आरयू के प्रेसिडेंट बनते हैं। कानाराम जाट बीजेपी युवा मोर्चा के प्रदेश मंत्री भी रह चुके हैं। इनके बाद 2014 में सचिन पायलट के खेमे के अनिल चोपड़ा इलेक्शन लड़कर जीत हासिल करते हैं। अनिल चोपड़ा ने इस बार के लोकसभा चुनावों में जयपुर ग्रामीण सीट से कांग्रेस के टिकट पर दावेदारी पेश की थी, लेकिन वे थोड़े वोट के मार्जिन से हार गए। चोपड़ा के बाद 2015 में सतवीर चौधरी एनएसयूआई की टिकट पर चुनाव लड़कर जीत हासिल करते हैं। सतवीर राजस्थान स्पोर्ट्स काउंसिल के मेंबर भी रह चुके हैं, सतवीर के बाद 2016 के चुनावों में अंकित डायल बाजी मारते हैं। चुनाव परिणाम के दौरान डायल को सरेआम फायरिंग करने के कारण गिरफ्तार भी किया गया था। 2017 में पवन यादव बागी होकर चुनाव मैदान में उतरते हैं और जीत हासिल करते हैं। 
2018 में राजस्थान यूनिवर्सिटी को पहला एसटी कैटेगरी से आने वाला अध्यक्ष विनोद जाखड़ मिलता है। ये एनएसयूआई से बगावत कर चुनाव लड़ते हैं और जीत हासिल करते हैं, विनोद जाखड़ वर्तमान में एनएसयूआई के स्टेट सेक्रेटरी है और दलित युवा नेताओं की लिस्ट में टॉप पर है। विनोद जाखड़ के बाद साल 2019 के चुनावों में पूजा वर्मा बाजी मारती है और आरयू की दूसरी महिला प्रसिडेंट बनती है। इसी के साथ राजस्थान यूनिवर्सिटी में लगातार चौथी बार निर्दलीय बाजी मारता है। इसके बाद साल 2022 तक कोरोना महामारी के कारण चुनाव नहीं हो पाते हैं। इसके बाद 2022 में एक बार फिर छात्र संघ चुनावों का बिगुल बजता है। इस बार चुनावों का मामला काफी दिलचस्प होने वाला था, क्योंकि इस बार छात्र संगठनों के साथ-साथ दो निर्दलीय मैदान में उतरे थे। इनमे एक तरफ थी सचिन पायलट गुट के मंत्री की बेटी तो दूसरी तरफ थे नागौर से आने वाले निर्मल चौधरी, सभी की नजरें इन चुनावी नतीजों पर थी, लेकिन जब नतीजे आए तो सभी हैरान रह गए क्योंकि सभी छात्र संगठनों और मंत्री की बेटी को हराकर निर्मल चौधरी छात्र संघ अध्यक्ष बन गए थे। 
निर्मल चौधरी को इस जीत के लिए काफी संघर्ष करना पड़ा, लेकिन उनकी मेहनत रंग लाई और वह चुनाव जीत गए। चुनाव जीतने के बाद निर्मल चौधरी का दबंग रूप सबके सामने आया। पुलिस अफसरों से लेकर प्रोफेसरों तक सभी को धमकाने को लेकर निर्मल चौधरी का नाम कई बार सुर्खियों में रहा। साल 2022 के बाद चुनावों पर अशोक गहलोत द्वारा रोक लगा दी गई, जो वर्तमान में भी नहीं हटाई गई है। अब देखने वाली बात होगी कि क्या 2025 में फिर से छात्र संघ चुनाव शुरू होते हैं या नहीं।
