Bihar Elections: Close contest between NDA and Grand Alliance on Sherghati seat

Patna, October 31 (IANS). Sherghati assembly seat of Bihar falls in Gaya district. Gaya in India has its own distinctive history. Gaya is mainly known for saving ancestors and Pind Daan as the footprints of Lord Vishnu are believed to be present in the Vishnu Pad temple here. In addition, it is also an important pilgrimage site for Buddhism, where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment at Bodhgaya. Along with religious importance, Gaya is also known for its traditional handicrafts. Buddhism actually originated in Bihar and spread all over the world due to the teachings of the Buddha, his example of simple lifestyle and extreme compassion towards every living being. It is also significant that the name of the state of Bihar is also derived from the word ‘Vihar’, which refers to the Buddhist monasteries scattered in Bihar. Hundreds of years after Buddha’s Mahaparinirvana, the Maurya king Ashoka of Magadha (268 BC to 232 BC) made many efforts for the revival, strengthening and widespread spread of Buddhism. Ashoka built Chaityas and Viharas for Buddhist monks. Talking about Sherghati assembly constituency, this seat came into existence in 1957. It was abolished in 1977 and re-established in 2010. In the first phase, the Congress won in 1957, 1962 and 1972, while in 1967 and 1969 it was in Jan Kranti-Daldiious and other candidates. respectively. The total population of Sherghati is 476561. The share of males in this is 243355 and the number of females is 233206. If we talk about voters, the total number of voters here is 135313. There are 476561 male voters and 145194 female voters according to the third gender10, while the number of the third gender is10. the total population, the total number of voters here is 0.59. In 2020 Manju Aggarwal of RJD defeated Vinod Prasad Yadav who won the election twice on JDU ticket by more than 16 thousand votes. The big issues here are unemployment, migration, education, electricity, roads and water. The main contest on this seat is believed to be between the candidates of the NDA and the Grand Alliance, but underestimating Jan Suraj’s candidacy could prove costly. –IANS MS/DKP Share this story Tags

Bihar Elections: Political ups and downs on Dinara, the historic land of Rohtas.

Bihar Elections: Political ups and downs on Dinara, the historic land of Rohtas.

Patna, November 1 (IANS). Dinara, which falls under the Bikramganj subdivision of the Rohtas district of Bihar, occupies an important place in the communal politics. This assembly constituency is one of the six segments of Buxar Lok Sabha seat. Bordered by Dehri-on-Sone in the east, Buxar district in the west and Kaimur district in the south, this area is situated on the banks of the Son river. Dinara is located in the plains of Ganga and its name comes from the Bhojpuri word diara, which means seasonal island formed when the river’s current changes. Talking about history, this area was part of Magadha, Maurya, Gupta, Pal, Shershah Suri and Mughal empires. Dinara had administrative importance even during the British rule. The population of Dinara is predominantly rural, with Yadavs, Kurmi, Koeri, Dalits and Bhumihars being the dominant communities. About 45 percent voters are from OBC category. While Yadavs are considered traditional supporters of RJD, the Kurmi and Koeri communities are inclined towards BJP and JDU. The number of Bhumihars in this area is around 25 percent, who are generally considered to be BJP supporters. At the same time, 20 percent Dalit voters appear to be crucial for NDA. Muslim voters make up about 6.8 percent, who generally support the Grand Alliance. Dinara assembly seat was established in 1951. So far 17 assembly elections have been held here. Congress has won 5 times so far. While JDU succeeded 4 times. Apart from this, Praja Socialist Party and Samyukta Socialist Party jointly won 3 times. Janata Dal won twice, while Janata Party, BSP and RJD won once each. In the 2020 elections, RJD’s Vijay Kumar Mandal won the seat. Despite being politically active, Dinara is far behind in the race of development. Lack of infrastructure is the biggest problem here. Even today, electricity and roads are not fully available in many towns. Education and health services are extremely limited. For higher education students have to go to Sasaram or Patna. Due to lack of jobs, every year a large number of youths migrate to states like Punjab and Haryana and work as agricultural labourers. According to the data released by the Election Commission in 2024, the total population of Dinara is 5,19,690, which includes 2,70,236 males and 2,49,454 females. At the same time, the total number of voters is 3,07,795. The voters include 1,61,167 men, 1,46,625 women and 3 third genders. –IANS PSK/ABM

Patna, October 31 (IANS). A new twist has come in the Dularchand Yadav murder case in Mokama. The doctor who conducted the post-mortem examination says that Dularchand Yadav did not die due to bullet injury. Before postmortem, X-ray of the dead body was also done. The doctor said that the panel will prepare the postmortem report after considering all the evidence. Jan Suraj’s candidate Piyush Priyadarshi is said to have gone out for election campaign with his supporters. At this time some people attacked his convoy with sticks. It is alleged that someone in the crowd also fired a bullet that hit Dularchand Yadav, resulting in his death. The police are investigating this case. Patna Rural SP Vikram Sihag says three FIRs have been registered recently in the incident of stone pelting and attack. After postmortem, the body of the deceased was handed over to the family members. The police are deployed on the spot. The grandson of the deceased identified five accused in the Dularchand Yadav murder case. Along with this, names of six people were given in the second complaint. In the initial investigation, bullet marks were found on Dularchand’s body. Let us tell you that Dularchand Yadav was once considered close to Lalu Prasad Yadav and he played an important role in strengthening the grassroots workers of RJD in the 1990s. In recent years he turned to the Jan Suraj movement and became close to Piyush Priyadarshi. Police sources said that this clash may have been caused by old rivalries and competition for supremacy at the local level during the election campaign. –IANS MS/DKP Share this story Tags

Durand Cup: World’s third oldest football tournament and Asia’s third oldest

New Delhi, October 31 (IANS). The Durand Cup, organized by the All India Football Federation (AIFF), is the most prestigious football tournament in the country. This tournament is the oldest tournament in Asia and the third oldest tournament in the world. The Durand Cup was started in 1888 by Henry Mortimer Durand in Shimla. At that time, India was under the British Raj and the purpose of the Durand Cup was to promote football among the British officers. After India’s independence in 1947, attempts were made to stop organizing the Durand Cup in India and make it a Pakistan tournament. But, the then Defense Minister, HM Danksy Patel made this tournament India’s and today it is recognized as the identity of Indian football in the country and the world. The Indian football season begins with the Durand Cup. This tournament is an important means of preparation for ISL and I-League clubs. Since 2019, the Durand Cup has been held in Kolkata and the North Eastern states. The reason for this is the craze for football in these states. Maharashtra, Delhi, Gujarat or the states of the South which thrive in cricket are behind Kolkata and the North Eastern states in football. Indian clubs and armed forces teams participate in this prestigious tournament. Last season 24 teams participated. The tournament is played through a group stage and then on a knockout basis. The Durand Cup was dominated by two Kolkata-based clubs, Mohun Bagan and East Bengal. Mohun Bagan has won the Durand Cup title 17 times, while East Bengal has won it 16 times. The 134th edition in 2025 was played between 24 teams from July 23 to August 23 in Kolkata, Jamshedpur, Shillong, Kokrajhar and Guwahati. The final was played at the Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata.
