Oil falls on renewed hopes of reaching a peace deal in Ukraine

The US oil index fell to its lowest level since February 2021, with the market awaiting signs of optimism around the possibility of reaching an agreement to end the war in Ukraine, and mixed economic data from China. Brent crude for February delivery fell 0.92% to settle at $60.56 a barrel, recording its lowest close since May. West Texas Intermediate crude oil also fell below $57 a barrel in weak trading ahead of the Christmas and New Year holidays, which fell with stock fluctuations. US security guarantees for Ukraine US negotiators have offered more substantial security guarantees to Kiev in a renewed effort to strike a deal, although these efforts also appear to be part of an effort to pressure Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky over territorial issues. Reaching a deal to end the conflict would lift restrictions on Russian oil flows, reducing turbulence in a market already suffering from a glut of supplies. Possible positive developments in the talks added to previous downward momentum, which was fueled by signs of weakness in China’s economy that could curb one of the main sources of demand for crude oil, outweighing news that real demand for oil and refining activity in the country rose during November. Also read: Big Russian oil discount attracts small Chinese refiners. Surplus expectations put pressure on prices. Oil is expected to be on track to record an annual loss, with supply expected to exceed demand this year and next. Fears of a supply glut are emerging in the key Middle East crude market, and trend-following commodity trading advisers were 100% short in both Brent and West Texas Intermediate on Monday, according to data from Bridgeton Research Group. Rebecca Babin, senior energy trader at CIBC Private Wealth Group, said: “Crude continues to trade with downward pressure as news this morning indicates increasing consensus on a possible ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine.” She added: “While the ceasefire will not lead to a sudden return of large quantities of Russian barrels to the market, it will significantly reduce the risks of future supply disruptions.” Also Read: Indian Officials: Russian Oil Shipments Will Decline With Tighter Controls. However, the fact that some details of the peace agreement remain unclear could provide support for prices, according to Babin. Influential geopolitical factors There are also other influential geopolitical factors. Even as talks between the United States and Ukraine have progressed, Kiev has stepped up its attacks on the Caspian Sea region, targeting Russian energy production and refining assets. At the same time, the market is also balancing attacks on shipping in the Black Sea with the risks of a US military move in Venezuela, after US President Donald Trump’s administration seized a giant oil tanker last week.

Major retailers didn’t pull ByHeart infant formula fast enough after botulism recall, FDA says

Four of the nation’s top retailers failed to promptly pull contaminated infant formula linked to a dangerous botulism outbreak from their shelves, federal health officials said in warning letters posted Monday. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration sent letters to leaders at Walmart, Target, Kroger and Albertsons, saying the companies continued to sell ByHeart infant formula for days or weeks, despite a Nov. 11 recall of all products in the outbreak that sickened more than 50 babies in 19 states. “As a participant in the supply chain, your firm must take prompt and effective action when notified of a product recall,” FDA officials said in warning letters sent to the companies on Dec. 12 and posted online Monday. The formula was found at Target stores in 20 states “well after the recall began,” one letter said. In addition, it was sold at a Target store in New Hampshire on Nov. 16 despite an electronic box on the product’s sales code, the FDA noted. And at a Target store in Arkansas, single-serve packets of ByHeart formula were promoted with a “Sold Out!” sign and a $2 discount from November 16th to November 22nd. Information from state and local health officials said ByHeart formula was found at Walmart stores in 21 states from Nov. 12 to Nov. 26. The formula was found in Albertsons stores in 11 states from November 12 to November 19, and at Kroger state stores from November 1 to November 10. companies failed to provide FDA with evidence that corrective actions had been taken, despite multiple requests, the agency said. The companies have 15 working days to respond to the letters. Walmart officials said in a statement that no ByHeart formula was sold after cash registers were blocked from selling the formula following the recall. “We moved quickly to issue a sales restriction and removed this product from our affected stores and clubs and online,” a company spokesperson said in an email. “We take all reports of inaction seriously and will respond to the letter.” Albertsons officials said the company worked closely with suppliers and regulators to identify and remove the products and communicate with customers. “ByHeart infant formula products have been removed from our store shelves,” the company said in a statement. All the babies in the outbreak were hospitalized and treated with an IV medication to stop the progression of the disease. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has expanded the outbreak to include all babies treated for botulism after eating ByHeart formula since it was first manufactured in 2023. Steven Mandernach, executive director at the Association of Food and Drug Officials, said the FDA itself has been slow to share information about the recall with state and local food safety officials. The agency did not fully share product lists until Nov. 14 — nearly a week after the initial Nov. 8 recall of two lots of ByHeart formula. He said it was “disappointing” in an outbreak involving the only source of nutrition for vulnerable babies. “There probably wasn’t the sense of urgency to get the product off the market that I would expect,” Mandernach said. ___ The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Department of Science Education and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Who is Brian Walshe? Man Convicted for Murder, Dismemberment of Wife; prosecutors find links to cold online searches

Who is Brian Walshe? Man Convicted for Murder, Dismemberment of Wife; prosecutors find links to cold online searches

Brian Walshe was found guilty Monday of first-degree murder in connection with the gruesome death of his wife, who he allegedly killed and dismembered nearly three years ago, according to a report by AP. Walshe’s wife, Ana, an immigrant from Serbia, was last seen on January 1, 2023, after a New Year’s Eve dinner at the couple’s residence. In January 2023, Walshe was charged with his wife’s murder shortly after her employer reported her missing. He initially told police she took an Uber or Lyft on New Year’s Day to fly to Washington because of a work emergency. Digital evidence against Walshe Prosecutors relied heavily on digital evidence when making their case against Brian Walshe. This included online searches such as “best ways to dispose of a body”, “best disassembly tool” and related queries. Investigators discovered searches on a MacBook, such as “how long for someone missing to inherit,” and “how long missing to be dead,” the report cited prosecutors. An insurance executive also confirmed that Brian Walshe was the sole beneficiary of Ana Walshe’s $1 million life insurance policy. During the trial, there was mention of an article titled “Is it possible to make DNA from a knife,” along with searches about “cleaning blood with ammonia, bleach, and hydrogen peroxide.” Allegations against Walshe Surveillance footage also captured a man resembling Walshe dumping what appeared to be heavy garbage bags into a bin near their residence. Later, a search of a waste processing facility near his mother’s home identified bags containing an axe, hammer, scissors, hacksaw, towels, a Tyvek suit, cleaning supplies, a Prada purse, boots similar to those last seen by Ana Walshe, and her COVID-19 vaccination card. Prosecutors told the jury that the Massachusetts State Crime Lab tested certain items for DNA and found Ana and Brian Walshe’s DNA on the Tyvek suit, along with Ana Walshe’s DNA on the ax, hacksaw and other objects. What did Walshe say about his wife’s murder? When first questioned by investigators, Walshe claimed his wife had been called to Washington, DC on New Year’s Day due to a work emergency. However, witnesses testified that there was no evidence that Ana Walshe took a taxi or boarded a flight. Walshe only contacted her employer on January 4. Walshe later admitted to dismembering her body and throwing it in a bin, explaining that he only did so after panicking when he discovered his wife had died in bed. Case of “sudden unexplained” death In his opening statement, Walshe’s lawyer, Larry Tipton, claimed this was not a murder case, but rather the “sudden unexplained death” of Ana Walshe. He portrayed a couple caring for each other and making plans for the future before Ana’s death, which followed a New Year’s Eve celebration with her husband and a friend. The couple have three young children, who are now in state custody, and lived in the affluent coastal community of Cohasset, about 15 miles southeast of Boston. The expectation was that the defense would present a case to prove that theory and cast doubt on the investigation. But in the end, Walshe’s defense team rested without calling any witnesses.

Ford to hit $19.5 billion, scraps planned electric cars in strategy pivot amid Trump’s policies

Ford to hit $19.5 billion, scraps planned electric cars in strategy pivot amid Trump’s policies

In perhaps the most dramatic example yet of U.S. automakers moving away from electric vehicles (EVs) in response to the Donald Trump administration’s policies, Ford Motor Company announced Monday that it is killing several battery-powered models, taking a $19.5 billion write-off in the process. According to a report by Reuters, the Michigan-based company announced the discontinuation of its F-150 Lightning car in its EV form, adding that it will pivot to making an electric model with extended range, a type of hybrid vehicle called EREV. Furthermore, Ford is also scrapping a next-generation electric truck as well as planned electric commercial vans, effectively marking the end of the line for its announced second-generation EV lineup. As a departure from pure electric vehicles, Ford said it would now focus on gas and electric hybrids, and projected to eventually generate thousands of jobs as a result of the pivot. However, the company said there will be some near-term layoffs at a jointly owned battery plant in Tennessee. “Rather than spending billions more on big EVs that now have no path to profitability, we’re allocating that money in higher-return areas,” Andrew Frick, the head of Ford’s gas and electric vehicle operations, was quoted as saying by Reuters. The cost of policy compliance Ford’s $19.5 billion write-down has two primary components – losses stemming from the cancellation of EV models, costs associated with the spin-off of the Tennessee battery plant with South Korea’s SK On. While scrapping EV models is expected to cost the company $8.5 billion, Ford expects the demerger to cost another $6 billion. In addition, the company expects to incur another $5 billion in “program-related expenses,” according to Reuters. Ford further said it would spread the write-down of nearly $20 billion, primarily taken in the fourth quarter and continuing through next year and into 2027. Declining EV sales, Trump’s policy push Ford’s move comes amid a sharp decline in sales of EVs in the US. In November alone, EV sales fell about 40%, following the September 30 expiration of a $7,500 consumer tax credit for those looking to buy EVs. The tax credit has been in place for more than 15 years to fuel demand for EVs and meet energy transition goals. In addition to pulling federal support for EVs, Trump also eased emissions rules by freezing fines automakers pay for violating fuel economy regulations, something likely to encourage manufacturers to sell more fossil-fuel-powered cars.

Dollar rand lower against yen in week packed with data releases and central bank decisions

(Add missing word “long” in quote in paragraph 18) * Trio of central banks to announce rate decisions * US non-farm payrolls and inflation data due * Yen rises as pound loses ground * US dollar index rand lower, bitcoin continues to lose streak By Chibuike Oguh and Amanda Cooper NEW YORK/LONDON – The US rand lower against the US dollar including the yen and Swiss franc on Monday in a week packed with central bank decisions and US data that may shed light on the Federal Reserve’s short-term policy outlook. The dollar was last down 0.31% against the yen, trading at 155.345 against the dollar. The Bank of Japan is expected to raise interest rates on Friday, giving the yen an advantage over a dollar that could lose support if expected U.S. rate cuts emerge early next year. “Our economists have shifted to expecting a December hike from the BoJ in their base case,” Goldman Sachs analysts led by Alexandra Kanter wrote in an investor note. “The guidance will be key for direction in the near term, and a recent report suggests that less emphasis may be placed on the bank’s estimate of the neutral rate.” The BoJ is likely to maintain a pledge to keep raising interest rates, but stressed that the pace of increases will depend on how the economy responds to each increase, sources told Reuters. The Bank of England and the European Central Bank are among the central banks making monetary policy decisions this week. Markets have almost fully priced in a Bank of England cut as inflation finally shows signs of easing while the ECB is expected to leave rates unchanged. Traders have begun to speculate that a rate hike could be on the cards for the ECB in 2026. Sterling was 0.12% lower at $1.33645, erasing earlier gains, while the euro was 0.06% higher at $1.174775 in choppy trade, on course for a fourth straight session of gains. “In terms of the BoE, I think it’s going to be very interesting. I think it’s going to be a finely balanced decision to cut,” said Joseph Capurso, currency strategist at Commonwealth Bank of Australia. “The risk is that the inflation data coming out this week could take away from the prices for subsequent rate cuts.” UK wage growth data is due on Tuesday and consumer inflation on Wednesday. US data in the spotlight A catalog of US data delayed by the government shutdown will be released, giving investors a long-awaited view of the world’s largest economy. The November jobs report is due on Tuesday and inflation figures on Thursday. A divided Fed cut rates last week, but Chairman Jerome Powell indicated that borrowing costs are unlikely to fall further in the near term. Current above-target inflation does not reflect the underlying supply and demand dynamics that are generating price increases much closer to the central bank’s 2% target, Federal Reserve Governor Stephen Miran said Monday, asserting that “prices are now stable again.” “The question really is, is the prevailing theme going to shift dramatically from the delayed data we get this week,” said Eugene Epstein, head of trading and structured products for Moneycorp Americas. “Right now, the US and most of its G10 peers are like two ships in the night on 2026 central bank rate policy. In the US, it’s a story of how long the central bank is going to wait for another cut, while almost everywhere else in developed markets it’s a story of how long the central bank is going to wait until they say they’re going to start hiking,” Epstein said. The dollar rose 0.16% to 0.79725 against the Swiss franc. The dollar index, which measures the US currency against a basket of rivals including the yen and the euro, was a shade lower by 0.09% at 98.318. Sweden’s Riksbank and Norway’s Norges Bank are expected to leave interest rates unchanged after their policy meetings this week. The Swedish krona strengthened by 0.48% to 9.3009 against the dollar. Against the Norwegian krone, the dollar was up 0.34% at 10.1582. In cryptocurrencies, bitcoin continued its losing streak and was on track for a fourth consecutive session of losses. It was last down 2.56% to $86,205.11. Ether fell 4.72% to $2,936.89. Four Avengers: Doomsday trailers to debut with Avatar: Fire and Ash as Marvel reveals characters

Four Avengers: Doomsday trailers to debut with Avatar: Fire and Ash as Marvel reveals characters

Marvel Studios is reportedly preparing an ambitious marketing rollout for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, with four different trailers to be unveiled during the theatrical screenings of James Cameron’s ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’. Marvel Studios releases four different trailers for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. According to reports, each trailer will highlight a different corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, marking a rare multi-faceted promotional strategy for a single film. According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter, Disney plans to release four Doomsday trailers over the next four weeks, with each trailer enjoying a seven-day theatrical window. While Marvel Studios hasn’t officially confirmed the plan, industry talk suggests that the trailers will debut sequentially rather than simultaneously. First trailer leaked on social media The first of these trailers has already created considerable online buzz after it reportedly leaked earlier in the day. The clip focuses on Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers, marking his return to the MCU after ‘Avengers: Endgame’. In the footage, Steve arrives at his home on a motorcycle and looks through his old Captain America suit before the scene shifts to a quieter, emotional moment in which he is seen holding his newborn baby. The camera lingers as Steve looks lovingly at the child before the screen fades to black. On the dark screen appears the text, “Steve Rogers will return in Avengers: Doomsday”, followed by a countdown to the film’s release date. The reported structure of the remaining trailers has fueled fan speculation, with many believing that each will focus on a different superhero faction – ‘The Avengers’, ‘Thunderbolts’, ‘The Fantastic Four’ and the ‘X-Men’. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is expected to be the first MCU film to unite all four teams within a single story. More on ‘Doomsday’ With Robert Downey Jr. starring, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is scheduled to release in theaters on December 18, 2026. Downey returns to the franchise in a new role as the villain Victor Von Doom, also known as Doctor Doom, marking a major shift after his iconic run as Iron Man. The film was originally slated for release on May 1, 2026, but Disney later rescheduled its release. Its sequel, ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, will now arrive on December 17, 2027, instead of the previously announced May 7, 2027 date, as reported by Variety. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ also marks the return of directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who previously helmed ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’, ‘Captain America: Civil War’, ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’. Their return has raised expectations that the film will echo the scale and emotional weight of Marvel’s most successful entries. The trailers will be played alongside ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’. The trailers are expected to play alongside ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’, the third installment in James Cameron’s smash sci-fi series. The film stars Zoe Saldaña, Sam Worthington, Oona Chaplin and Stephen Lang and is expected to hit theaters on December 19. With Avatar traditionally dominating the global box office, Disney’s decision to link the two franchises underscores the scope of its theatrical ambitions. If the reported strategy holds, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ could see one of the most elaborate trailer rollouts in blockbuster history, using both nostalgia and spectacle to reignite excitement around the MCU ahead of its next big crossover event.

What are the Nikon Comedy Wildlife Awards? Founded in 2015 by photographers Paul Joynson-Hicks and Tom Sullam, the Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards were created to celebrate the lighter side of wildlife, while promoting conservation through positive storytelling. The competition has since partnered with Nikon and supports environmental charities, using humor as a gateway to engage wider audiences with the importance of protecting wildlife and natural habitats. Over the past decade, the awards have grown from a niche online competition to an internationally recognized photography event, attracting professional photographers, amateurs and young enthusiasts. Previous winners have included images of laughing seals, awkward birds and expressive primates, all united by a shared purpose: to make people smile while reminding them what is at stake when wildlife is lost. With record participation this year, organizers say the awards continue to prove that comedy can be a powerful tool for conservation, making wildlife photography accessible, relatable and widely shareable across generations.
