The body of a newly married Sudha Devi was found hanging by the noose of a saree in Godhi Chowk ward number nine of the city’s police station area. The deceased Sudha Devi (22) was married to Nitish Kumar, a resident of Godhi Chowk, on August 21 this year. As soon as the information was received, the city police reached the spot and arrested the body and sent it to Sadar Hospital for postmortem. The deceased’s brother, Subodh Kumar Singh, accused his in-laws of dowry murder. Accusing her in-laws, she said that no dowry was taken at the time of marriage, but after a few days of marriage, husband Nitish Kumar and his family started demanding dowry. Subodh Kumar Singh alleged that because she did not pay the money, his brother-in-law Nitish Kumar and his in-laws continuously beat Sudha Devi and eventually killed her. He was severely beaten even before he was hanged. Neighbors informed about the incident over phone, after which the family members reached Araria and informed the city police office. The police have detained the deceased’s husband Nitish Kumar and are interrogating him closely. Other members of the in-laws fled after the incident. Manish Kumar Rajak, head of the police station, said the case appeared to be one of dowry harassment and murder. Further steps will be taken after a case is registered on the written complaint of the next of kin of the deceased. Currently, the investigation is ongoing and the post-mortem report is awaited.
