New Delhi, November 26 (IANS). Everyone is a fan of the attitude and philosophy of Harivansh Rai ‘Bachchan’ in Hindi poetry. Through poetry he made the world aware of the truth of life along with the sensibilities. His introduction is just that, “Mitti ka tan, masti ka mind, kshanbhar jeevan mera parichay.” Harivansh Rai Bachchan was born on 27 November 1907 in Allahabad (now Prayagraj). His family members liked to call him ‘Bachchan’. In ‘Madhushala’ he wrote about his own upbringing, “I am a Kayastha family, my ancestors shaped me so much, seventy five percent of my blood is in my body, I have the ancestral rights, the Madhushala was sold in the courtyard of the tavern, by the hands of my grandfathers and great grandfathers.” In fact, with his poems and writings, he became a household name all over the world in a short span of time. While living in Allahabad, human sensibilities began to appear in his writings. ‘Bachchan’, who spent more than half of his life in a rented house, expressed the problems of the people in his own words. After graduating from Allahabad University in 1929, he took admission in MA, but left his studies midway due to the non-cooperation movement of 1930. After doing MA in 1938, he went to Cambridge. He married Shyama during his studies but both stayed together only for some time. After Shyama’s death, ‘Bachchan’ started feeling sad. When Shyama’s health was bad, he wrote a poem, “Raat half puller meri hatheli, ek ungli se likha tha pyaar tumne.” This poem brought ‘Bachchan’ a lot of fame. Madhushala also did not lag behind to increase his popularity. On January 24, 1942, Harivansh Rai ‘Bachchan’ attacked Suri for the second time. ‘Bachchan’ was a lecturer in English at Allahabad University from 1941-1952 and was also associated with All India Radio. He also worked as a Hindi expert in the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India. English expert Harivansh Rai ‘Bachchan’ had an amazing command over Hindi. It is said that he always included Shyama’s death and early marriage in his poetry. He wrote: “What will be the occasion of the past, my mind will repent all my life, I will have to die, I could not die when I had to die, I could do nothing in life.” His writings ‘Kya Bhooloon Kya Yaad Karoon’, ‘Need Ka Nirman Phir’, ‘Basare Se Door’ and ‘Dashdwar Se Sopan Tak’ have excellent writing. Harivansh Rai ‘Bachchan’ achieved his greatest fame in 1935, when ‘Madhushala’ came. He was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 1966. He was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1968 and the Padma Bhushan in 1976. He breathed his last on 18 January 2003 in Mumbai. His son Amitabh Bachchan is a Bollywood megastar. Harivansh Rai ‘Bachchan’ continued till his death to give messages to the youth through poems and developed a new method of love poetry. It is said that Mahatma Gandhi himself asked him why he was bent on making people drunk through ‘Madhushala’? When Mahatma Gandhi read ‘Madhushala’, his fear ended. Even to give a message to the depressed youth, Harivansh Rai wrote in a poem: “There was a star in life, I believe he was very dear, if he drowned, he drowned, look at the joy of amber, how many of his stars are broken, how many of his loved ones are left behind, those who are left behind are found again, but speaking on a broken bygonne are stars.” Through this, Harivansh Rai ‘Bachchan’ spread a new consciousness in the society. A deep message was given to the society in ‘Madhushala’. Some of the lines of ‘Madhushala’ are: “Muslims and Hindus are two, one, but their cup, one, but, their tavern, one, but their situation, both remain one until they go to the mosque or temple, the mosque, temple increases enmity, the tavern brings peace.” Referring to the reality of life in the poem ‘Is Paar, Ons Paar’, he wrote: “I go today, you come tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, all friends, the world.” She kept crying, whoever has to go, goes. My thoughts would waver because of the waves on the shore itself. When I come alone, I don’t know what will happen. On this side, dear Madhu, you are there, who knows what will happen on the other side.” –IANS ABM/VC
