Head of BNPB talks about viral mini market in Sibolga looted by residents

Jakarta – Head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) Lt.-Gen. TNI Suharyanto responded to a video about a mini market in Sibolga, North Sumatra, which was allegedly the target of looting and went viral on social media. Suharyanto provided an explanation. “Yesterday afternoon it went viral in Sibolga City, there was an attempt to take logistics. So we checked with our staff who could go in there, they took food. So it was not looting or destruction, breaking glass, etc. No, he looted food,” said Suharyanto, Sunday (30/11/2025) in a press conference on YouTube. “Yes, maybe they’re worried, scared because it’s closed and food is limited, so that’s what they’re doing and that’s what’s partly gone viral on social media,” he added. Suharyanto said that his party will continue to maximize the handling of flood disasters. “We also provided a direct explanation. Maybe ladies and gentlemen, if you open TikTok, I will talk about the problem of looting in supermarkets, some of them there who will slander like 10 thousand or 5,000, so they will slander us and the handling,” said Suharyanto. “But we are still optimistic because there are still many people who support us rather than providing negative corrections, but that is of course our concern,” he added. Update on Death Victims in 3 Provinces On that occasion, Suharyanto also gave an update on the death toll from natural disasters such as floods and landslides that hit Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra. The total death toll due to flooding in the three provinces has now reached 316 people. The following is data on the death toll and missing victims in 3 provinces: Aceh: 54 people dead, 55 people missing. West Sumatra: 90 people are dead, 87 people are missing.
