India set a new record in purchasing Russian oil, becoming the largest importer of Russian oil through sea routes. All this happened when America put a lot of pressure on India to stop buying Russian oil. US President Donald Trump even imposed an additional 25% tariff on India, making India pay a total of 50% duty on its exports to America, the highest in the world. India’s oil imports from Russia will hit a six-month high in December, according to new ship tracking data, as New Delhi defies US sanctions on the Eurasian country’s crude producers Rosneft and Lukoil. Russian crude arrivals to India are expected to reach 1.85 million barrels per day (mbd) in December, up 0.2 mbd from the previous month, when shipments were recorded at 1.83 mbd, data compiled by real-time global commodity intelligence and analytics firm Kpler showed. Increase in imports for the third consecutive month With a slight increase in Russian oil imports in December, it will be the third consecutive month that the supply of this black gold from Russia to India has increased. For the record, India imported 1.48 mbd of crude oil from Russia in October, which increased to 1.83 mbd in November. Interestingly, India’s December imports from Russia currently stand at 1.85 mbd, the highest since June 2025, when the South Asian country bought 2.10 million bpd from Moscow. Russian sanctions have no effect. Dr. Speaking to Sputnik, Mamdouh G. Salameh said that heavy US tariffs on India and Western sanctions against Russia will not have any significant impact on the India-Russia energy partnership. “I completely agree with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov that Russia has extensive experience in selling its oil even under the strictest Western sanctions. The proof of this is that Western sanctions have completely failed to have any significant impact on the Russian economy and its oil and gas exports, and Russian exports continue to reach all corners of the world,” Salameh told Sputnik India.
