Indian Air Force has airlifted 45 civilians and 57 army personnel from the disaster area in Sri Lanka
New Delhi, November 30 (IANS). Operation Sagarbandhu was launched in Sri Lanka to provide all possible help to the people suffering from the disaster caused by Cyclone Ditvaah. During this, the Indian Air Force along with the Sri Lankan authorities saved the lives of 45 people in the landslide-hit Kotmale area. The area where all of them were stranded was completely isolated and communication was lost. During the day, Indian Air Force helicopters evacuated 45 stranded people, including 6 seriously injured and 4 children. He was transported safely to Colombo. Those rescued included 12 Indian nationals and people from various countries. To bolster operations on the ground, the Indian Air Force also airlifted 57 Sri Lankan Army personnel to the affected area to assist in rescue and clean-up operations. Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal had earlier informed on the social media platform ‘X’ that under India’s ongoing Operation Sagar Bandhu in Sri Lanka, MI-17 helicopters of the Indian Air Force have evacuated people stranded in Sri Lanka, which included citizens of Germany, South Africa, Slovenia and the United Kingdom. The Indian Air Force posted on social media platform ‘X’ that IAF helicopters conducted a hybrid rescue operation to rescue the stranded passengers from a restricted area. A group of Garuda commandos was landed to escort them to a pre-arranged helipad at Kotmale, from where 24 passengers, including Indians, were airlifted to Colombo. In this sequence, three seriously injured were taken to Colombo for immediate medical assistance. According to the air force, the passengers were stranded in a restricted area due to landslides and adverse weather conditions in the Kotmale area of Sri Lanka. Helicopters of the Indian Air Force carried out a hybrid rescue mission to save these people.
